Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves exciting issues for our nation's security? If so, Organization 02942, Sandia Standards Lab, is seeking an R&D Mechanical Engineer to utilize their strong technical knowledge and experiences!

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

+ Support daily operations of the Flow, Acceleration, Shock, Humidity (FASH) projects within the Primary Standards Lab
+ Apply knowledge, experience, and technical capability in gas flow and humidity (moisture) measurements and the related systems, equipment, methods, and procedures
+ Team with other PSL engineers and technologists to develop and execute plans and solve measurement and quality issues
+ Research and support the development of new measurement technologies, techniques, and procedures
+ Provide direction for the operation and maintenance of precision electro-mechanical, mechanical, and thermodynamic calibration systems
+ Mentor and coordinate activities of technologists and student interns, including technical training, scheduling, and workload management
+ Travel on a limited basis to support NNSA technical surveillances and related activities


+ A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or another relevant STEM field plus 5 years related technical experience; or equivalent experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job
+ Experience with statistical methods of analysis
+ Experience developing electromechanical systems meeting high-level technical, quality, and ES&H requirements
+ The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance


+ An advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related STEM field
+ Experience with the following:

- Operating and maintaining thermodynamic, mechanical and electro-mechanical measurement equipment, including moisture generators, provers, sonic nozzles, fluid temperature baths, and thermal chambers
- Working with high-precision scientific measurements and calibrations, including gas and fluid flow, humidity, temperature, and shaft speed
- Measurement uncertainty
- A broad application of instruments, assemblies, standards, and systems
- Working within a thorough quality system in lab environment
- Using LabView, Python, or MatLab
- ISO 17025, Z540, QC-1, NAP24, and other quality assurance programs and specifications
- Developing methods, processes, technical work documents, and procedures
- Working in an R&D environment or Lab setting
+ A motivated self-starter with demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team on day-to-day calibration activities, as well as long-term research projects
+ An ability to deal with full workloads under rigid target dates
+ Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
+ The ability to apply knowledge and ideas to solve engineering problems
+ A demonstrated ability to develop technical work documentation including calibration procedures, measurement assurance plans, drift analyses, and technical memos
+ The desire to learn new skills as the need arises and develop expertise in areas that may be unfamiliar
+ An active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret

Department Description:

Department 02942 provides calibration support of Sandia customer assets and working standards used to identify product attributes and test system calibrations; including support of customer owned assets at the customer site and support for SNL research and production organizations. Department 02942 maintains a wide variety of measurement expertise and consults on technical problems, calibrates reference standards and assists in technical guidance of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories. This department also manages the R&D program for the Primary Standards Labs.

Security Clearance:
