Department Description:

As part of the Radiation & Electrical Sciences Center, the Applied Nuclear Technologies Department (1384) explores, develops, and applies physics and engineering principles to many areas of nuclear and radiation technology. The department develops and qualifies dosimetry for mixed neutron/gamma environments, designs and conducts experiments that are used in the development and validation of models describing neutron/gamma production and transport, and supports modeling, simulation, and experiments as part Radiation Effects Sciences. Staff in the department develops, validates, and applies a state-of-the-art multi-physics code (NuGET) that describes the production and transport of neutrons and gammas and their interactions with materials, components, and systems. The department develops and performs nuclear criticality benchmark experiments for water-based uranium systems. The department directly supports DSW activities with analyses that define requirements and experiments that provide qualification evidence for components and systems in Hostile and Fratricide radiation environments. The department works closely with the Nuclear Facilities Operations Staff to tailor and characterize appropriate testing environments in the TA-V nuclear facilities to meet customer needs.
