R&D RF Design Engineer (Experienced)

Albuquerque, NM

The RF Advanced Engagement Systems department is seeking a highly\-motivated RF engineer with system level communications and digital signal processing experience to participate in the research, development, analysis, and testing of advanced RF systems for important National Security applications\. Travel for technical interactions, supplier/partner visits, field testing occasionally\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Research, develop, analyze and/or field test advanced RF/Microwave/Radar/Communications systems for important National Security applications

+ Participate on highly motivated and effective multidisciplinary development teams

+ Engage with customers, stakeholders, and colleagues to develop technical solutions to difficult and sometimes ambiguous requirements and/or objectives


+ Bachelor's in a relevant science, technology, engineering, or mathematics \(STEM\) field; AND a Master's or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering;

+ Two or more years experience in RF systems and/or communications engineering;

+ Educational background or relevant experience in at least three of the following areas:

- RF/Microwave/Analog circuit design

- RF Communications Systems


- Signal Processing

- Embedded Systems \(Hardware/Software\)

- Analytical/Computational Electromagnetics/EM modeling and simulation

- Antenna design and measurement

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph\.


+ Ability to conduct communications link modeling and analyses;

+ Ability to modulate/demodulate communications signals to/from in\-phase & quadrature \(I&Q\) samples;

+ Ability to model and understand communications protocols for use in mobile ad hoc networks \(MANets\);

+ Experience in designing and/or assessing secure MANets for given implementations;

+ Plan, execute, and document verification and test activities of agreed to requirements and/or objectives;

+ Possess the basic knowledge for emitter geolocation using cooperative signals in I&Q sample space;

+ Laboratory skills and knowledge of RF\-related test equipment;

+ Familiarity with antenna/array measurement techniques on compact and/or near\-field ranges, and experience in the use of RF/microwave test equipment for radiation pattern and mutual coupling characterization;

+ Demonstrated field test experience;

+ Experience with commercial RF/microwave circuit simulation and antenna design tools such as HFSS, ADS, CST, Momentum, Genesys, FEKO, IE3D, etc\.;

+ Experience or familiarity with the following software packages: Python, C/C\+\+, GNU Radio, and Matlab/Simulink or equivalent is desirable;

+ Knowledge of system and circuit EDA tools;

+ Knowledge of high\-level programming language\(s\);

+ Embedded software and firmware familiarity;

+ Knowledge of RF Communications, RADAR, and/or EW systems and principles\.

+ Hardware level signal processing experience \(FPGA, DSP, or GPU\);

+ Firmware implementation of signal processing algorithms on FPGAs or DSPs;

+ Active DOE Q clearance;

+ Active SCI clearance\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.
