What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D S&E, Computer Engineer to join our dynamic team.

Our team is seeking a highly motivated embedded engineer. Your primary focus will be embedded firmware and software for specialized RF communications systems for National Security applications. Job duties include conceptualization, requirements development, programming, operating systems integration and configuration, design definition documentation, qualification/acceptance testing process development and execution, system deployment support, and system sustainment activities. It is crucial to have an in-depth understanding of mixed-signal (RF, analog, digital) electrical designs which enables the control, optimization, and troubleshooting of these special communication systems.

Our systems range from ultra-low power RF receiver/transmitter designs typically requiring C-code bare-metal programming up to cutting-edge high-performance CPU/GPU/DSP computing systems typically requiring C++ programming on Linux operating systems. Projects range from very urgent, quick reaction requests in response to real-world driven needs to longer term, life-critical efforts with rigorous development requirements. You will become a member of a multi-discipline, success oriented high-performance team. This position requires occasional travel of 6-8 trips within the Continental U.S. per year.

On any given day you may be called on to:

+ Research, develop, analyze and/or field test RF systems Integrate RF systems into custom multi-system assemblies

+ Interface with analog, RF, digital, and mixed signal circuits

+ Specify and perform/oversee the purchase of parts

+ Design, assemble, test, and troubleshoot embedded electronics systems and cables

+ Develop requirements, test/acceptance procedures, and document design definition

+ Document and oversee the transition of designs to 3rd party production partners

Qualifications We Require:

+ Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline or a Bachelor's degree with five or more years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience

+ Experience developing embedded software and firmware (C, C++, HDL) in bare-metal

+ Knowledge with embedded electronics design and time-critical control of sensors

+ Familiarity with general test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, DVM, logic analyzers)

+ Moderate travel required

+ Ability obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Experience with software regression testing

+ Experience using and administering software project management and configuration management tools

+ Mixed signal digital and analog hardware including proficiency in reading schematics and layout

+ Ability to plan, coordinate, and document field tests

+ Experience or familiarity with the following software: MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW or equivalent is desirable

+ Experience with high-level programming language(s) Knowledge of RF, Digital Communications, radar, and/or EW systems and principles

+ Ability to work effectively on both small and large development teams (two-to-eight members)

+ Good communication and documentation skills

+ Great presentation skills with interest and ability to interact with internal and external customers

+ Be motivated by working with a highly successful, dynamic project team delivering systems that impact our

About Our Team:

The Advanced Radio Frequency Applications department researches, develops, evaluates and deploys specialized RF systems for a number of national security applications including space based, airborne, and terrestrial RF communications, Command and Control (C2), remote sensing, nontraditional Electronic Counter Measures / Electronic Warfare (ECM/EW), and specialized Tagging, Tracking, and Locating (TTL) systems. Members of the department have broadly varying skills including RF/microwave circuit and system design, antenna design, digital signal processing, embedded system hardware and software, digital system design, operational field-testing development/support, and program/project management. Design challenges include highly miniaturized electronic system design, communication system architecture, ultra-low size, weight, and power (SWaP) hardware, ultra-low-noise receivers, and signal extraction/classification techniques in low Signal-to-Noise-Ratio environments. We are tightly integrated with other departments in the Advanced RF Applications business area and regularly partner across organizational boundaries internal and external to SNL, to include working closely with Government/Military partners to consistently deliver high-impact solutions to some of our nation's most difficult national security problems.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship.
