What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Structures and Mechanisms Department (05324) is looking for an experienced, initiative-taking, team-oriented, versatile, R&D Mechanical Engineer to support mechanical design and analysis activities for Nuclear Deterrence (ND) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) related design activities.

On any given day, you may:

+ Create conceptual models and designs and coordinate with RF, electrical and/or systems engineering to define design requirements that meet system requirements

+ Support the creation of and/or review system requirements to ensure our design meets customer needs and intent

+ Interpret mission, electrical, and mechanical system requirements as they apply to the design

+ Perform modeling, analysis, and model validation using prototype testing and simulation, and/or coordinate these activities with team members

+ Perform mechanical design, test definition and execution, requirements definition and/or modification, customer and production partner coordination, and support the assembly of hardware

+ Perform lab testing using lab facilities internal and external to our department, consisting of electrical or embedded sensor components, and document these results

+ Map test plan results directly to design and system requirements

+ Develop Qualification and Acceptance test documentation

+ Coordinate tasking with CAD designers and other mechanical engineers.

+ Present design information to our customers and colleagues

+ Travel to our partner’s facilities to coordinate efforts, ensure proper transfer of design information, and identify product/process improvements as needed

+ Mentor and train early career mechanical engineers and technologists.

Qualifications We Require:

+ Bachelor’s degree and a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or STEM related discipline with 5 or more years of experience; or

+ Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering or related STEM field with at least 10 years of experience in mechanical design, and/or mechanical analysis

+ Position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:

+ Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering

+ Strong engineering background in thermal, structural statics and/or dynamics, and/or RF design with emphasis on mechanical design

+ Finite element modeling experience and skills in Thermal, Structural, and/or Dynamic Vibration

+ Experience applying engineering principles to research, design, and development of fieldable mechanical/electromechanical hardware to meet mission/systems requirements

+ Proficient in Creo and GD&T and the desire to continually enhance ability

+ Experience working across multiple disciplines

+ A high comfort level working with custom-designed mechanisms and structures

+ Experience transitioning electromechanical designs from demonstration/prototype to production

+ Understanding of good “design for manufacturability” principles

+ Knowledge of feedback control system principles

+ Experience with working with Electronic and RF Designers for electronic packaging (example VPX packaging, custom builds, RF antennas, Gimbals, etc)

+ Basic knowledge RF part design and packaging requirements

+ Basic knowledge of RADAR and Synthetic Aperture RADAR

+ MATLAB skills

+ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills personal initiative, responsiveness, and attention to detail

+ An entrepreneurial can-do spirit and the desire to exceed customer expectations

+ Active DOE Q-Level or equivalent DOD security clearance strongly desired

The Structures & Mechanisms Department, 5324, supplies mechanical and electromechanical, design, test and mechanical analysis to customers across Sandia Laboratories. We design, analyze, assemble, and test prototype hardware ultimately creating mature fieldable hardware designs. We offer quick turn mechanical modification, 3D printing, and machining capabilities along with electromechanical fabrication and assembly, test definition and execution, and installation for fieldable hardware. We have expertise in building prototype hardware while generating the appropriate documentation to enable “build-to-print” options for larger-scale production runs. Security Clearance:
