What Your Job Will Be Like:

As part of the surety mechanisms group, you’ll craft unique solutions for novel analysis solutions for the design and development of mechanism components that play a critical role in assuring the safety and security of our nation’s nuclear deterrent in a wide range of scenarios. In this role, you’ll collaborate with engineering and research teams across the broader Nuclear Security Enterprise to design, produce, and assess these mechanically intricate components in assemblies using rigid body dynamics, electro-magnetic analysis, or FEA analysis.

On any given day, you would be expected to:

+ Provide virtual prototypes of surety components.

+ Utilize advanced modeling tools (RBD, Magnetic, FEA) to solve complex engineering challenges.

+ Analyze data in support of design, production, and stockpile assessments.

+ Develop new methods for surety component assessment.

+ Promote judicious test strategies that increase understanding while reducing risk and cost.

+ Identify vulnerabilities and support failure analyses.

+ Document analyses rigorously.

+ Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

+ To maximize versatility and long-term impact to the organization, an individual is sought that also has the training and desire to work more generally as a design engineer. This position will offer you substantial opportunity for training, technical mentorship, and work across multiple nuclear deterrence programs. Some travel is required.

Qualifications We Require:

+ PhD in mechanical engineering or a related discipline; or Master’s in mechanical engineering or a related discipline plus 4 years’ experience; or Bachelor’s in a STEM discipline plus 8 years’ experience

+ Equivalent experience in lieu of degrees must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

Ideally, your background would also include some mix of:

+ PhD or Master’s in mechanical engineering.

+ Experience with magnetics modeling software such as ANSYS/Maxwell.

+ Familiarity with rigid multi-body dynamic modeling software such as LMC Virtual Lab Motion or Adams.

+ Experience developing test strategies and utilizing test data for model validation.

+ Experience with design optimization, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty propagation, or the use of surrogate models.

+ Experience in the design, development, and production of mechanical products.

+ Basic proficiency with computer aided design.

+ Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and tolerance analysis.

+ Proven ability to interact well with diverse teams.

+ Excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare clearly-written reports and briefings.

+ Active DOE Q security clearance.

Security Clearance:
