R&D S&E, Systems Lead Design Engineer-(Experienced)

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to be the Lead Design Engineer \(formerly Technical Co\-Lead\) for the W80\-4 LEP team\. Experience in NNSAs 6\.X process and a good understanding of Sandias Realize Product Procedures \(RPPs\) is essential for this role\. The primary job responsibilities include but are not limited to: providing technical leadership to a team of highly qualified technical engineers working on a complex systems engineering project; answering technical questions related to the architectural design of a nuclear weapon; assisting in understanding and maturing requirements; assisting with qualification, and coordination with other technical leads in component PRTs, among other activities\. In addition, the Lead Design Engineer will engage with the W80\-4 project management team to develop schedules, cost projections, and variance reporting for all systems engineering activities in 6\.3 and beyond\. The Lead Design Engineer will also routinely interface with LLNL, NNSA, the USAF, and Department of Defense contractors\.

On any given day, the successful applicant may be called on to:

+ Oversee warhead design and integration activities over multiple engineering disciplines \(mechanical, electrical, requirements, surety, quality, and assembly\)
+ Provide technical guidance on critical design elements and lead engineering review boards
+ Support and review development of requirements
+ Provide technical briefings to Sandias executive management, DoD, NNSA, defense contractors, and/or other NNSA sites
+ EVM status reporting
+ Lead design or cost trade studies
+ Technical interface with component designers
+ Technical liaison with production agencies
+ Represent Sandia on multi\-organizational \(i\.e\. NNSA, DoD, LLNL, SNL\) project teams
+ Interview technical candidates to join the W80\-4 LEP team


+ Master's degree, in Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering,
+ or related discipline with at least five years of experience; or doctorate in related discipline with at least three years of experience\.
+ Exceptional communication and written skills
+ Experience leading teams
+ Experience working in the 6\.X process;
+ Ability to travel up to 25% of the time;
+ Must have an active U\.S\. DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ Experience working on engineering design, requirements maturation, nuclear safety, use control, nuclear enterprise assurance, qualification, or production;
+ NW systems experience and/or related hardware experience in phase 6\.3 and beyond
+ Experience integrating the Earned Value Management \(EVM\) system into work processes

Department Description:

The W80\-4 System Integration Department is part of the Sandia/California Weapon Systems Engineering Center\. The Weapon Systems Engineering Center is responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U\.S\. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent\. The W80\-4 System Integration Department is comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated engineers with advanced technical degrees, primarily in mechanical and electrical engineering\. A major effort for this organization is the engineering design and development in support of a Life Extension Program for a nuclear warhead \(W80\-4\)\. The W80\-4 warhead will be deployed on future U\.S\. Air Force Long Range Standoff \(LRSO\) missile platforms that will replace the existing Air Launched Cruise Missile \(ALCM\)/W80 Warhead weapon system in our nation's nuclear deterrent stockpile\. This is a 10\-year program that will require close collaboration with many different departments within Sandia as well as with organizations outside of Sandia such as LLNL, NNSA, Production Facilities, and the Department of Defense \(DoD\)\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
