Department 05336, High Reliability Special Comm, seeks an experienced, highly motivated R&D Systems Engineer to participate in the research, development, troubleshooting, field testing, production, and delivery of advanced RF/Microwave Special Communication Systems. The systems built are utilized in high impact, high consequence national security applications.

The organization's systems are based on sophisticated signaling techniques and ultra-low power RF receiver/transmitter designs. It is essential to possess and develop an in-depth understanding of mixed-signal (RF, analog, digital) special communication systems. The successful candidate will become part of a multi-discipline, success oriented, high performance, project team delivering systems that impact our National Security. Projects range from rapid, quick reaction requests in response to real-world driven needs to longer term, life-critical efforts with meticulous development requirements.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

+ Develop trust-based partnerships with organizations internal and external to Sandia
+ Lead and participate in multidisciplinary teams of engineers and domain specialists
+ Use engineering principles to conduct trade studies, release documentation, and realize product
+ Provide programmatic and technical status updates to SNL management and external partners
+ Contribute to all phases of product realization, including conceptualization, requirements development, technical development, documentation, qualification/acceptance processes, field testing, system deployment support, and system sustainment activities

Required:

+ A Bachelors degree in a relevant STEM field plus five years related experience
+ The ability to occasionally travel
+ The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance and SCI-level clearance, which may require a polygraph test

Desired:

+ Experience with the following:

- Mixed signal digital and analog hardware
- Working in linux, building kernels, installing/upgrading libraries, drivers, memory management, and customization to run on a variety of embedded devices
- Controlling RF communication systems through software and firmware while optimizing their performance
- Using and administering software project management and configuration management tools
- Matlab programming, data processing, and simulation
+ Proven experience and/or course work and interest in wireless communication systems
+ An ability to plan, coordinate, and document laboratory and field tests
+ Phenomenal presentation skills with interest and ability to interact with all kinds of customers
+ Strong communication and documentation skills
+ The ability to work effectively on both small and large teams (two-to-eight members)

Department Description:

The High Reliability Special Communications Department (5336) develops terrestrial, airborne, and space based special communications systems for use in surveillance and reconnaissance and high value target and material controls. Our customers include a variety of government organizations conducting special operations missions. Staff members have a diverse skill base including microwave circuit design, antenna design, signal analysis, digital signal processing, embedded software, and digital FPGA designs. Applications include long and short-range communications and transponder systems, typically utilizing ultra-low power signaling techniques. Our design challenges include highly miniaturized electronics, low-power maximally efficient transceivers, signal extraction in very low signal-to-noise environments, and signal analysis of RF and communication systems.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
