Become our next Systems Engineer and create innovative solutions for our nation's security! We maintain responsibility for multiple projects key to the NNSA Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) including direct responsibility for the Consequence Management (CM) program, and the Joint Technical Operations Team (JTOT). In this role, you will help evolve how the nation responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies through operational coordination, next generation technical tool and technique development, and technical training.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Provide technical expertise and leadership and coordinate with program leadership

+ Lead operational elements of the JTOT Response program, coordinate with skillset managers and responders, handle response posture, and ensure SNL is ready to respond

+ Lead SNL planning and integration with interagency partners/customers (DOE, SPP, Stabilization, etc.)

+ Lead SNL Response and Home Team (HT) Execution, including engagement with HT Communications recruiting, skillset meetings and directives, job aid development, layout reconstruction, evacuation procedures and COOP/Contingency facilities, response posture, and deployment status

+ Ensure SNL Exercise Design and Inject development and training events are consistent with national program objectives and requirements

+ Identify and lead technical development efforts that can apply LDRD or other programmatic R&D sponsors to develop next generation technical capabilities

+ Participate as a member of the national JTOT, ARG, and/or CM Response Team and other response teams

+ Travel periodically to support program needs

Due to the nature of this work, applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

+ Master’s Degree in a relevant engineering field, plus one year of directly related experience

+ Two years leadership experience in complex, high hazard field type operations

+ Experience coordinating large, complex, cross-cutting system engineering projects with high hazard conditions, including work planning and controls, managing and negotiating budgets and deliverables, and engaging with customers/sponsors

+ Experience planning and assisting in experiments, test designs, response exercises, or hands on training experiences

+ Experience working in an operational environment

+ Experience with Nuclear Weapons and weapon design information

+ Technical writing skills and experience documenting processes

+ Experience in nuclear emergency response activities

+ Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent as well as SCI level clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Intimate and deep understanding of Joint Technical Operations Team (JTOT) operations and capabilities allowing the individual to take the leadership role for this team.

+ Strong understanding of operational and technical capabilities of the Accident Response Group (ARG) allowing integrations where the JTOT and ARG missions have connected operations.

+ Experience leading interdisciplinary teams of diverse technical experts

+ Consistent record of demonstrating initiative and getting results by taking ownership of assignments

+ Broad expertise enabling participation in multiple NEST technical areas

+ Ability to work in loosely defined areas with minimal direction while maintaining vision for the overall mission

+ Experience interacting with outside agencies and provide well-organized and professional presentations and/or training on technical and/or programmatic issues

+ Nuclear Weapons Safety background

+ Demonstrated ability to:

+ Perform work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment

+ Engage with many different teams and customers

+ Initiate and lead discussions and problem solving among teams

+ Develop and implement new processes

About Our Team:

The Nuclear Incident Response Programs Department is responsible for the oversight and management of several Nuclear Emergency Response teams as well as Sandia portions of the National Consequence Management(CM) Program. Department personnel are responsible for and actively developing deployable technologies to mitigate an explosive release of hazardous materials and for predicting the consequences of such releases. Containment technologies use aqueous foams and rapidly deployable containment systems which can be used to mitigate explosively dispersed materials from the atmosphere. Department personnel are also responsible for writing and maintaining field deployable, state-of-the-art computational codes for predicting the dispersal, transport, deposition, and subsequent consequences of these types of hazardous material releases. Additionally department personnel fill leading national roles in Consequence Management and Radiological Dose Assessment including developing new dose assessment analysis techniques as well as software and other tools to assist responders to a radiological event.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
