R&D Systems Engineer - On Orbit Payload (Early/Mid-Career)

Albuquerque, NM 87102

We are seeking an Engineer/Scientist to join a team with diverse backgrounds (e.g., electrical engineering, computer science, aerospace engineering, physics), motivated by a passion for maximizing the on-orbit effectiveness of a payload constellation critical to the USNDS Mission. Primary scope encompasses on-orbit state-of-health, performance monitoring/development of commanding/anomaly support for the GBD payload constellation (e.g., optical, electromagnetic pulse). Personnel that enjoy intriguing data analysis and have an interest in the flight aspects of space payloads, will thrive in this challenging and fulfilling environment. Secondary scope for this position encompasses the integration and test of payload hardware, at offsite space vehicle facilities, and during early on-orbit testing. During a typical year, our Team is involved in post-delivery activities associated with two launches, and the sustainment of a 24+ satellite payload/sensor constellation.

+ Can obtain a DOE Q clearance

+ Experience conducting flight on-orbit engineering and data analysis
+ Experience with satellite command and telemetry system design, analysis, and test
+ Experience with the functional integration/test of flight hardware; example, test software and data evaluation, software updates with regression testing, electrical ground support equipment validation, problem resolution
+ Experience developing for a multiple-OS environment (e.g., Linux, Solaris, Windows)
+ Global Burst Detector (GBD) knowledge and familiarity with space and ground segments
+ Active DOE L or Q clearance, or equivalent DoD S or TS clearance
+ Demonstrated willingness to work cooperatively with others, attaining shared objectives

Department Description:

The Integration, Test, and Analysis Department (Org 6782) performs key test and post-delivery activities with a focus on the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection Systems (USNDS) Global Burst Detector (GBD) Space Segment. GBD payloads have a long association with Global Positioning System (GPS) host satellites and contribute to a diverse national capability for the detection of nuclear detonation. We lead the I&T of GBD hardware in Albuquerque and support the payload I&T at satellite vehicle factories and launch sites. Once launched, we support early orbit turn-on and the checkout of our payload sensors. We have a team of analysts that conduct state-of-health and performance monitoring, development of commanding, and triage/investigation/resolution of anomalies for the 24+ on-orbit satellite constellation. Our spaceflight function is conducted in unison with ground systems engineering and the mission user community. The department staffs and manages two satellite environmental test facilities; TVAC and LAZAP. The Thermal Vacuum (TVAC) Facility has a comprehensive suite of chambers that simulate the temperatures, and high altitudes, of a space environment, characterizing designs and assessing payload space flight survivability. The Laser Applications (LAZAP) Facility is used to propagate visible high-powered lasers through the atmosphere with a large aperture beam director, testing optical sensor mission readiness on earth orbiting satellites.
