R&D Systems Engineer-Remote Sensing (Experienced)

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team. The chosen candidate will join a team that has staff that supports fielded, remote sensing systems. The staff on this team work at locations outside of New Mexico (posting manager can provide details). The team covers flight and ground system engineering activities.

On any given day, duties could include:

+ Supporting system issue resolution, status monitoring, trending, and analysis
+ Participating in system on-call duties
+ Supporting tests and exercises
+ Scheduling engineering activities (upgrades, preventative maintenance) and ensuring all installations of equipment or software are smoothly integrated
+ Supporting evaluations and documentation of the systems
+ Reporting system status to site management, Sandia management, and partners
+ Leading and supporting technical and programmatic reviews with the sponsor and other partner organizations
+ Acting as a liaison between sponsor and community partners and Sandia

The staff member selected will work in technical multidisciplinary, high personal interaction environments. The team supports the systems 24/7 and are on a rotating on-call schedule. Candidates will be trained and eventually knowledgeable on flight/ground aspects of systems as well as site operations, procedures, and policies.

Relocation to one of the site areas will be needed.


+ Bachelor's degree in engineering or science; or equivalent experience and education (AS + 4 years; No Degree + 8 years)
+ 5 years related technical experience, in addition to the education requirement above
+ Can obtain a SCI clearance


+ Direct experience working with a Sandia-developed and fielded remote sensing system
+ A strong technical foundation with the ability to assimilate new disciplines
+ Demonstrated ability in working effectively with project teams, program and line management, fellow staff, and various customers, site, and external entities
+ Experience with specific programs within the Sandia Advanced Systems Programs Office (ASPO)
+ Experience with activities at the sites as well as day-to-day operations
+ Experience with integrated system level testing of the specific systems
+ Experience with hardware/software installations of specific systems
+ Experience using the ground hardware and software of systems
+ System administration experience on SGI, SPARC, and Dell systems running Redhat Linux
+ Oracle database experience
+ Direct flight system knowledge for the systems
+ Experience generating, modifying, and utilizing procedures needed for real-time testing, problem resolution, software test and checkout, and day-to-day operations
+ Direct experience on formal Configuration Management processes (DR, RFC, etc.)
+ Direct experience with data architectures, data quality and data assurance
+ Interest in community engagement and potential business development
+ An active SCI clearance

Department Description:

The Advanced Systems Program (ASP) is responsible for designing, developing, and managing ground systems for real-time national security missions. ASP is the primary Customer interface and user community interface for these unique systems. We provide the technical design, integration, advisement, and supervision for delivery and mission extension through architecture, system engineering, technical integration and evaluation of systems, and mission system engineering/analysis.

One of the responsibilities within ASP is Mission Engineering and Analysis (06332). We are responsible for analyses of signatures & signals as they relate to mission definition coupled with payload & ground capabilities in optimizing system performance to meet customer mission technical requirements. We perform the following: radiometric sensor test planning and support; mission data analysis; remote sensing modeling, characterizing and optimizing sensing instrument performance, and technical analysis and design of next generation systems to meet overall system mission performance and operational goals. The Organization provides a variety of work to an array of customers that includes: analysis results, custom toolsets, simulation findings and technical guidance.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
