R&D Systems Engineer-Threat Intelligence (Experienced)

Departments 5873/5877/5879 partner with each other and matrix with other Sandia organizations to tackle the full system lifecycle of a technical project from concept, design, and fabrication to development testing, performance verification and support of delivered products. There are System Engineering needs across a broad range of deliverables. The successful candidate may fill a position in one of three departments 5873/5877/5879 depending on their strengths, experience and program needs. Leadership and travel opportunities are available, as well as engagement and collaboration to build strategic sponsor partnerships.

We are seeking outstanding System Engineers to join our multidisciplinary team to:

+ Team with design, product and test engineers, as well as analysts, to design, develop and build complex sensor systems focused on radiation detection and other sensors (e.g. temperature, pressure, magnetic, seismic, acoustic and imaging) for a diverse set of national security needs
+ Evaluate, and utilize analytical and computational tools for the evaluation of complex systems and systems-of-systems
+ Provide decision insight to customers in ill-defined or complex multi-domain problem areas by applying critical thinking, using a diversity of technical skills and expertise, and effectively communicating to explain options and trade-offs
+ Communicate results in concise, complex reports, in person, or electronically to a diverse customer set at Sandia, in the Intelligence Community, and with other mission partners
+ Interact daily with staff in collaborating departments and with US Government strategic partners
+ Interact with the R&D community in the development and implementation of innovative sensing technologies and algorithms
+ This position requires periodic travel

+ You possess a Bachelors and Advanced (Masters or PhD) degree in relevant science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline; OR a Bachelors in STEM and four years of relevant experience
+ Your background includes two or more years experience as a Systems Engineer for technical projects
+ You have a current DOE Q clearance and ability to satisfy SCI access which may require a polygraph


Ideally, your background would also include:

+ Broad experience in applying analytical methods for Strategic Partnering Program (SPP) and Strategic Partnering Intelligence Program (SIPP) projects
+ Ability to solve complex problems in the absence of clear direction (experience in ambiguous environments)
+ Demonstrated experience, training and knowledge in/of the following: radiation sensing technologies, materials for radiation detection, sensor electronics, signal processing methods, algorithm development for signature identification
+ Familiarity with radiation sensing, imaging or other sensing technologies
+ Experience in designing to withstand harsh environments and environmental testing
+ Demonstrated ability to implement high-quality standards while establishing and maintaining effective and productive relationships with internal and external partners at all experience and authority levels
+ Active SCI clearance

Department Description:

The Threat Intelligence Center enables the national security missions of the defense and intelligence communities to reduce threats to our nation by applying engineering expertise to develop solutions to some of the nations most challenging technical problems. The Tailored Operational Support Group (5870) conducts research, development, engineering and analysis for SPP/SIPP sponsors. The group is involved in the program management and development of technologies as part of the Threat Intelligence Center (5800) at Sandia. We provide research, design and development of innovative technologies and sensing systems and technical assessments complemented by intelligence-based analysis. Our teams are diverse technically and reach out to an extended network at the laboratories to address and assess critical national security issues with a multi-disciplinary approach. The departments in Group 5870 tackle a variety of technical projects from concept, to sponsor training, delivery and support of products.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
