What Your Job Will Be Like:

At the Z machine, a highly interconnected community of experts collaborates to support complex pulsed-power experiments. The facility supports many kinds of experiments and is constantly evolving to support new capabilities even as these high-energy experiments result in machine wear and tear. System engineers at Z are part of a team which supports longer-term operational objectives; the position connects the day-to-day cadence of experimentation with the longer-term health and needs of the system. You could be the Systems Engineer we are seeking to join our team of scientists, engineers, and technologists, contributing to the safe and efficient realization of scientific objectives on the Z Machine!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Team with operations, engineering, and physics partners to support Z operations.

+ Facilitate and coordinate interdisciplinary teams focused on studying and solving operational problems; examples include studying operational timelines or delays or qualitatively evaluating the changes associated with introducing a new process.

+ Team with others to research and develop processes, systems, and conceptual architectures for the highly unique and specific requirements of the Z machine.

+ Analyze and support operational data and propose new techniques or tools.

+ Develop processes to improve data capture and utilization of captured data.

+ Clarify where data capture is insufficient and develop approaches to closing gaps.

+ Support efforts to improve operations management, organization, and roles/responsibilities development.

Qualifications We Require:

+ Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or a relevant STEM field plus 5 years of experience; or a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in relevant STEM fields plus 1 year of experience

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Experience working in large-scale scientific research facilities and with large-scale scientific datasets

+ Experience working in or supporting high hazard operations including Work Planning & Controls, procedure development, and training requirements

+ Experience in multi-stakeholder design problems and multi-stakeholder negotiations

+ Experience in operations research and industrial engineering

+ Knowledge or experience with engineering software applications such as Matlab and/or data analysis tools such as Python or R

+ Experience with theories of organizing data; developing taxonomies, defining architecture, etc.

+ Experience with Business Analytics Tools (Power BI, Tableau, etc.) and creating reports

About Our Team:

The department is a diverse, interdisciplinary team that develops strategic operational concepts and approaches for the Z Facility and other Pulsed Power facilities, as well as for new experimental facilities. This work is accomplished through collaborations with operations, engineering, science, and program teams. Solutions address quality, efficiency, safety, and security that are well-aligned to achieving, and enabling, the science goals of the programs performing experiments at Z. Work scope includes the health of Z, the Z management system, IT infrastructure, communications, scheduling analysis, information flow, data systems, systems engineering, training systems, and control monitoring and data acquisition design support. Seamless integration of all aspects is a key element of the department’s efforts.

Security Clearance:
