The Terminal Ballistics Technology Department is seeking an experienced, motivated engineer with a track record of demonstrated system design concepts. Our diverse team primarily conducts Strategic Partnership Projects work aligned with the Integrated Military Systems - Strike Systems Terminal Effects subprogram area. In addition, we support DOE-Nuclear Deterrence programs including Advanced Exploratory concept development and the Joint Munitions Program. We develop and lead projects with our DoD War fighter sponsors in the areas of Target Defeat and Target Protection technologies utilizing our Blast, Ballistics and Blunt impact design tools and field test experiences. Your responsibilities will include the lead mechanical engineer role on full product life-cycle prototyping of pathfinder technologies to support terminal ballistics field testing as well as Strike & Aerospace Systems ground testing and flight-testing activities.

In this position, on any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Team with the 5420 managers to develop, lead and execute programs with our multidiscipline technical teams for integrated systems solutions
+ Customer engagements and development of cost proposals and new eSPP proposals
+ Utilize your engineering skills for oversight of initial concept development and trade studies in support of numerical experiments with our Modeling & Simulation analysts. For example, payload / delivery vehicle mass properties trades under delivery and impact conditions
+ Utilize your project management skills for development of systems requirements with the project team along with cost, schedule and performance metrics and tracking documentation
+ Work with your design team to define and implement systems engineering architecture principles to reduce and manage validation and verification risks to our customers
+ Lead test engineer for characterization and performance testing of Prototype hardware systems involving managing hazards associated with activity level work, Work Planning & Controls and mission assurance documentation. Examples include an instrumented test articles for penetration testing, blast or ballistics impact testing of war-fighter Personal Protective Equipment, Systems integrator for sled, mobile guns or rocket launched flight missions
+ Documentation and presentation of programmatic and technical plans and results at internal and external project evaluations including Requirements, Experiment Design and Test Readiness Reviews.


+ You possess a masters degree in mechanical, civil or related STEM discipline plus 3 years of relevant experience plus a bachelors degree in an engineering discipline.
+ Solid modeling design experience (SolidWorks and Cubit or similar)
+ Your skillset includes demonstrated success in leading design teams through the engineering design cycle
+ Understanding of impact and structural dynamics fundamentals with a goal to expand your knowledge in this field through department mentors, training and work assignments.
+ Limited travel required in support of project meetings and field-testing activities.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q level security clearance


Ideally, your background would also include:

+ Model Based Systems Engineering experience
+ Academic understanding of blast, ballistics and blunt impact events
+ Mechanical design and analysis using simple engineering codes (Ex. Solidworks type simulations) or corporate tools (SSM-Presto, CTH, Zapotec)
+ Experience working with our Sandia mechanical environments facilities and development of environmental test specifications
+ Additive Manufacturing Methods and Applications
+ Experience in design of experiments including selecting Instrumentation for characterization of test article and or target performance
+ Signal Processing experience for post-test data analysis (Ex. MATLAB)
+ Targets design and fabrication engineering materials including concrete targets
+ Authoring test plans and Work Planning Control documents for assembly, checkout and testing of subassembly and assembly systems
+ Demonstrated effective communication skills including report documentation (Ex.-SAND Reports) and presentation of design analyses
+ Ability to perform hazardous operations with appropriate training (Ex. XPL160, EOJT) and certification (Ex.-Qual Card for Mechanical assembly work around safed rocket motors)
+ Consistent track record of delivering on time results to the customer
+ You have an active DOE Q security clearance
