Radiation Source Development and High Energy Density Physics at the Z Machine (Experienced)

We are seeking a staff member with a focus in experimental physics to lead Z Facility research and development projects\. This role offers opportunities to focus on x\-ray spectroscopy, data analysis, and radiation source development at Z, which is the nation's premier pulsed power facility coupling megajoules of energy to magnetically\-imploded targets\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead the design, execution, and analysis of experiments on the Z Facility in the area of magnetically driven implosions for novel radiation sources and high\-energy\-density physics
+ Collaborate with other organizations to facilitate experiments on Z utilizing intense radiation sources, and communicate to understand national needs in this research area
+ Participate in the development of new diagnostic capabilities, diagnostic characterization, or analysis methods particularly related to x\-ray diagnostics
+ Build and sustain collaborations with the national community using intense x\-ray sources for experiments studying the response of systems and materials in extreme radiation environments
+ Represent the research and development in the organization through publications in scientific journals and presentations at conferences
+ Travel for joint experiments or workshops and to present material at scientific conferences


+ PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or B\.S\. in Physics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline and 5 years of experience in a related technical field
+ Co\-authored publication or presentation at scientific conferences in a related area of research, such as neutron or x\-ray radiation sources or diagnostics, nuclear fusion, high\-energy\-density or plasma physics
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


+ Excellent verbal, written, planning, and interpersonal skills conducive to working as a part of a large team
+ The demonstrated ability to develop and sustain collaborations with external organizations
+ Programmatic and strategic leadership experience in scientific research and development
+ Leadership of experiments in a large team environment
+ Highly self\-motivated, adaptable to change, and an excellent work ethic suited to making rapid progress through independently directed work
+ Previous experience fielding experiments or diagnostics at a major pulsed power or high\-energy\-density physics facility
+ Experience in plasma physics , radiation source design, high\-energy\-density physics and diagnostics, or inertial confinement fusion
+ Knowledge of x\-ray spectroscopy and atomic physics, including both experimental and modeling capability conducive to inferring plasma parameters from measured data
+ First\-authored publications in a related area of research, such as neutron or x\-ray radiation sources or diagnostics, nuclear fusion, high\-energy\-density or plasma physics
+ Experience with data analysis, diagnostic instrument design, and modeling of diagnostic systems \(e\.g\. x\-ray imaging systems, x\-ray spectrometers, nuclear diagnostics, etc\.\)
+ Active DOE Q Clearance

Department Description:

The High Energy Density Experiments department \(Org\. 1688\) is made up of a multi\-disciplinary team of physicists, engineers, and technologist who design and perform high energy density \(HED\) experiments driven by fast pulsed power\. The majority of experiments are conducted on the Z Facility, the world's most powerful pulsed\-power generator, in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration's Stockpile Stewardship Program\. On the Z machine, we generate megajoules of x\-ray energy in z\-pinch implosions, create plasmas hotter than the sun, and material pressures equivalent to that in the Earths core\. The department actively collaborates with other national and international laboratories and universities on the advancement of magnetically driven implosions for radiation production, understanding the physics of hot, dense plasmas, and thermonuclear fusion in the laboratory\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
