Position Title:  Radio Astronomer / Scientific Programmer

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a pioneering Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) array with an angular resolution of the order of ten micro-arcseconds. It operates at 1.3 mm and shorter wavelengths. The EHT investigates the characteristics of emission from Supermassive Black Holes on event-horizon scales, with the ultimate goal of making an image on these scales, thereby testing Einstein's theory of general relativity in the current field limit.

The EHT is developing next-generation computational frameworks for the correlation, calibration, and analysis of VLBI data. These efforts include developing a cloud computing paradigm for the rapid relationship of VLBI data with extremely wide recorded bandwidths, creating new calibration and data pipelines to address the specific challenges of millimeter VLBI, and designing synthesis imaging algorithms tailored to the current EHT array and its future enhancements.

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) seeks a Scientific Programmer (Radio Astronomer) to take a leading role within an international team to develop next-generation software solutions for outstanding EHT challenges. The successful candidate will work with the EHT science community to help formulate EHT software requirements and determine technical specifications of new and modified software.
