Radio Communications Electronics Fabrication Technician

We have an opening for a Senior Electronics Fabrication Technician / Electronics Fabrication Technician Specialist on the Radio Installation Team. You will provide fabrication support for radio communications equipment and systems for programs and projects throughout the Livermore Site, Site 300 in Tracy, and other off-site locations. You will work at heights on communication towers and at remote microwave and communication sites throughout the Bay Area. Overtime and occasional travel will be required. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. 

In this role you will 

  • Provide general electronic installation, fabrication and maintenance support of radio communications and wireless applications throughout the Laboratory and Site 300.
  • Work at heights, such as with scissor-lifts, man-lifts, on building roofs, and on communication towers to 300 feet.
  • Utilize schematic drawings, parts lists, and assembly drawings to convert moderately complex requirements into specific hardware deliverables and estimates.
  • Provide radio support to LLNL programs and projects to install, fabricate, and assemble a variety of communication systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain electronic and communication systems in vehicles.
  • Install cable trays and mounting hardware as required using hand and power tools.
  • Provide customer support using good communication skills and effectively interface with other members of a small service-oriented group to fulfill the customer's needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.  

Additional job responsibilities, at the 532.3 level

  • Propose solutions and alternate approaches to solve complex electro-mechanical fabrication and installation problems and tasks and seek engineering or supervisor support for clarification.
  • Generate estimates, provide work instruction, and lead teams to accomplish fabrication, modification, and installation of radio communication and electro-mechanical systems and components based on layouts, diagrams, and verbal instruction.
  • Provide advanced fabrication support on complex communication systems using standard machine tools, hand tools, soldering techniques, and to test and measurement equipment.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in Engineering, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Radio Frequency (RF) Technology or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience working at heights, such as with scissor-lifts, man-lifts, on building roofs, and on communications towers to 300 feet.
  • Intermediate skills and understanding of the fabrication, modification, and installation of moderately complex radio communication and electro-mechanical systems and components.
  • Experience working in a customer service/field support environment.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, negotiate, and solve moderately complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
  • General knowledge of radio transmission systems and industry standards.
  • Ability to work scheduled as well as unscheduled emergency overtime and occasional travel.
  • Effective written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

Additional qualifications at the 532.3 level

  • Advanced understanding of and significant experience translating complex electrical, electronic, and mechanical drawings into working estimates including both time and materials required making additional recommendations as necessary.
  • Ability to lead work teams and train coworkers to complete tasks safely and efficiently while producing high quality results.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Current or prior certification in Tower Climber / Rescue and/or operation of a man-lift, and scissor-lift.
  • Motorola training on SmartZone 7.X systems, Key Management, OTAR, GTR8000, MCC7500.
  • F.C.C. General Radiotelephone License or equivalent.
