RD Metallurgy Materials Science (Experienced)

Are you interested in brazing technology? We have an opportunity for you! We are seeking a results-oriented material science staff member to conduct basic and applied research in process science and engineering, with a focus on brazing technology. Your duties involve selecting materials, brazement design guidance, developing furnace brazing processes and specifications supporting numerous projects across the laboratories and with production vendors. Other duties will include technical program development and management, supporting engineering applications, writing technical papers and reports, and presenting results at program meetings, professional conferences, conducting short term problem solving and failure analysis, in support of customer needs. Occasionally (<20%) travel to vendors in Kansas City, California, and other locations.


+ Master's or PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field and a bachelors degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)
+ Experience with materials and process characterization techniques, and process-structure-property relationships
+ A track record of both written professional publications and oral presentations as proven with published papers in peer reviewed journals and presentations of research at technical conferences
+ Experience with welding and/or brazing engineering design concepts and technical specifications
+ Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance


+ Self-motivated and interested in broadening and deepening their scientific research capabilities through a high-profile research and engineering support program.
+ Strong communication, teaming, and interpersonal skills and an interest in working with other highly motivated contributors.
+ A dedication to customer support, including a proven track record to understand and meet their needs.
+ Experience with joining processes such soldering, brazing or welding and related physical metallurgy concepts
+ Experience with production and manufacturing
+ Project management and development experience
+ Experience with materials characterization techniques
+ Experience with process control concepts and techniques
+ Current L or Q clearance

Department Description:

The Metallurgy and Materials Joining Department is the principal organization for metallurgical and joining research and engineering support throughout the Laboratories. Expertise covers a wide range of experimental and predictive capabilities that apply fundamental process, physical and mechanical metallurgy principles. Specific technical areas include welding and soldering, special brazing and diffusion bonding, and mechanical behavior. The scientific focus is on materials structures, properties, performance and reliability. Staff supports a variety of national security programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.
