RD Support Technologist - Ion Beam Laboratory (Experienced)

Albuquerque, NM 87102

We are seeking an experienced Lab Support Technologist to maintain and operate a 6 MV Tandem Accelerator and 1 MV Tandem Accelerator in Sandias Ion Beam laboratory. In this role, you will have the opportunity to be involved in the research and development of radiation effects testing, fabrication of advanced technological systems and novel ion beam analysis techniques. The 6 MV Tandem is the work-horse of the Ion Beam Laboratory running a wide range of ions species from protons to gold and ion energies up to 10s of MeV in support of Sandia National Laboratories mission areas. Additionally, you will oversee the commissioning of a new 1 MV Tandem Accelerator designed for lower energy implantation and irradiation studies. Both these systems represent unique challenges and require a hands-on technologist to enable Sandias cutting-edge research to be performed.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Maintain, operate and upgrade the 6 MV and 1 MV Tandem Accelerators
+ Develop the skills necessary to operate the accelerators and to maintain the multiple sources that provides the ions
+ Maintain the high vacuum system and high voltage system for optimal operation
+ Develop and maintain a safety conscious work environment
+ Interact with both internal and external collaborators on work published in high impact journals

+ Associate degree or higher in an electronics, engineering-related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience
+ Experience with general electronics, high voltage and vacuum systems
+ Experience with GUI programing languages such as LabView and Visual C or experience with software-hardware integration in an accelerator-based environment
+ Experience with machining
+ Ability to get and maintain a DOE Q clearance

+ Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related discipline
+ Prior experience with particle accelerators, ion sources and programable logic controllers
+ Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team
+ Good time management skills
+ Energetic, hard working person who is excited about problem solving

Department Description:

The Radiation-Solid Interaction Department operates the Ion Beam Laboratory (IBL). This state-of-the-art facility houses 5 major accelerators: a 6 MV Tandem, a 3 MV Pelletron, a 400 kV implanter, a 30 kV Helium Ion Microscope and a unique 100 kV nanoImplanter with a<20nm spot size. Other experimental facilities include micro beam lines on all the major accelerators and a TEM, equipped with gas, fluid, and nanomechanical stages, with in-situ ion irradiation available from both the Tandem and a Colutron source. The IBL engages in three major research thrusts:

+ Understanding the performance of materials in radiation environments. These projects impact the performance of microelectronics in space and other hostile environments, as well as cladding materials in nuclear reactor and storage environments.
+ Developing and applying novel ion beam techniques to precisely measure materials compositions. Applications in this area include mapping hydrogen isotopes in fusion wall material and measuring the composition of thin complex materials such as transition metal oxides.
+ Exploring the materials science of defects in solids. This broad area includes single ion implants for quantum applications, anomalous grain growth in nanograined materials, hydride formation under irradiation, and nanomechanical responses of materials.

In each thrust the department provides unrivaled capabilities to multidisciplinary teams with an interest in publishing high quality research and applying the results to problems of national interest.
