Research & Development, Senior Software Engineer (Experienced)

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer ( R&D, Computer Science) to lead the development of a suite of codes used to estimate the consequences of a nuclear reactor accidents. The primary responsibility of the programmer will be to serve as a software solutions architect and project manager who will interact with customers to gather requirements and design the architecture for the software. This work will include directly interacting with the scientific staff to understand the system to be modeled and then designing the appropriate front-end (GUI) and back-end structures (databases, object models, calculation framework, etc.) as well as performing the actual coding, maintenance, and testing. Project Management responsibilities will include managing the budget, reporting progress to the customer, working with management to drive project success, and leading a team of programmers and scientist to drive project success. In all aspects, the developer is expected to adhere to group programming policies on coding practices, standards, and quality assurance. The developer is also expected to participate in code testing, verification, and validation.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Design and development of backend aspect of all applications to include data structures, computations and computational flow, database;
+ Assist the department in converting a legacy Visual Basic 6 (VB6) and Fortran applications and GUI into a current Java, .Net, or Python applications;
+ Have the ability to work independently to research, comprehend, and become the expert in new software packages and capabilities.


+ Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience;
+ Experience with leading software projects and designing and architecting solutions while working directly with customers to ascertain requirements and vetting proposed solutions;
+ Experience with project management;
+ Experience with the Java Programming language;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.


+ An advanced degree in an Engineering or Science field (e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Physics, etc.);
+ A certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP);
+ Experience with Graphical User Interface design and development;
+ Experience with developing object models and calculations for scientific applications;
+ Experience with converting legacy Fortran codes to modern languages;
+ Experience with Graphical Information Systems (GIS);
+ Experience with software development in VB 6;
+ A strong scientific and mathematical background;
+ Experience with developing web-applications.

Department Description:

The Accident Consequence Modeling and Analysis Department (ACMAD) supports the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Department of Energy (DOE) by providing experts in the Modeling of the Atmospheric Transport, Environmental, and Economic impact of released Nuclear Material as well as expertise in severe accident phenomenology; for both Emergency Response, Emergency Preparedness, Licensing applications, and basic scientific research. This team consists of high performing multi-disciplined scientists and engineers that work in a collaborative environment to develop state of art computer codes and analyses of severe accidents in nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities and the environmental transport of radiological releases, as well as the health and economic consequences of such releases. The team interacts broadly with both our domestic Federal customers as well as domestic and international customers, stake holders and customers with the goal of making nuclear power as safe as possible in a complex world faced with existential threats from climate change, terrorist threats and natural disasters.
