LLNLs Biosciences and Biotechnology Division (BBTD) a collaborative, dynamic, and multi-disciplinary group - has an opening for a Research Scientist with experience in microbiology, biomaterials science, or biochemistry.You will be an integral member of BBTD and will support ongoing bioremediation work that directly impacts programs within the Department of Energy.

You will isolate microorganisms from environmental samples, screen for bioremediation activities of interest, and analyze substrate degradation products.You will learn new skills and techniques and apply them to solve real-world scientific problems that inform the safe use of these technologies for both government and commercial applications.

The position is in the Biosecurity and Bioforensics group of the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division and matrixed to Global Security.

Conduct standard microbiological practices (e.g., pouring and streaking agar plates, sterile culture, growth curves)
Isolate microorganisms from environmental samples.
Screen environmental isolates and consortia for biodegradation activity using previously developed assays.
Analyze degradation products using HPLC, LC-MS, or related approaches
Contribute to the development of encapsulation methods for model organisms
Provide solutions to problems of moderate complexity that require creative use of established and/or innovative methods.
Maintain laboratory notebook and communicate results with relevant team member
Contribute to basic lab maintenance (making solutions, restocking, waste removal, organization, etc.)
Perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelors Degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Chemistry, or related field.
Proficiency with basic wet lab techniques (pipetting, dilutions, making solutions)
Experience with sterile techniques, culturing and maintenance of bacterial strains, and media preparation.
Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Ability to perform basic laboratory maintenance (restocking, waste removal, organization etc.)
Proficient written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deliver presentations, prepare written reports and to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.

Experience with LCMS, HPLC, UV-vis, and GC-MS
Prior experience with microencapsulation, biomaterials, and/or polymer science, or organic chemistry.
Experience working in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory.

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
