We have an opening for a Science Reference Librarian. You will be responsible for connecting scientists, engineers, and others with research resources. You will develop, lead and provide reference, information literacy, outreach and scholarly communications services. You will also assist with collection development in several disciplines in the physical and life sciences. The library is administered by the Technical Information Department (TID) and supported by the Office of the Deputy Director for Science and Technology (DDST). This position is in the Business Directorate.

Essential Duties

- Provide reference services in the physical and life sciences; coordinate and train paraprofessional staff and graduate student interns in reference. Engage researchers in the virtual and physical spaces where they seek information.
- Develop and deliver a creative, standards-based, information literacy program with a focus on early to mid-career scientists needs. Develop curriculum and methods; advertise, develop and provide in person and virtual training sessions.
- Assist researchers in using citation analysis tools, research analytics and citation metrics reports.
- Develop subject guides and tutorials in physical and life sciences, primarily. In consultation with others, design and develop the library websites, particularly for reference, discovery and access services.
- Customize end-user interfaces and advise on metadata or other elements to improve the user experience (e.g. configure the Discovery layer, use LibApps/LibGuides).
- Evaluate research collections and recommend changes, new additions, primarily in physical and life sciences; participate in collections analysis projects.
- Stay abreast of current developments in library and information science, reference, information literacy, discovery and access services; contribute professionally to the field through conference attendance, scholarly activity, and service to the profession (e.g. committee participation, consortial activity.)
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

- Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from an American Libraries Association accredited graduate program, or equivalent combination of related experience, education and training.
- Reference experience in a research or academic library or equivalent setting.
- Knowledge of information literacy standards for research and experience using them in library instruction.
- Familiarity with information technologies for virtual reference, teaching and learning, scientific writing and publishing (e.g. citation management, citation analysis, electronic Laboratory notebooks, scientific markup, data management tools)
- Ability to develop in-person, virtual and hybrid learning modules (e.g. research guides, videos and tutorials within a curriculum.)
- Evidence of continuing interest in learning and incorporating new methods, research and technologies into library reference and outreach efforts.
- Familiarity with library service assessment, qualitative and quantitative methods, and ability to apply them.
- Knowledge of physical, life science and engineering collections and the scientific publishing landscape (publishers, vendors, packages, databases, resource collections.) Experience evaluating collections and making collection recommendations.
- Advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively with a strong commitment to continuous improvement of services and to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Desired Qualifications

- Bachelors degree in the physical or life sciences, preferably physics, chemistry or engineering.
- Professional interest in scholarly communications, research data management, advising on domain and institutional repositories, and developing open access policies.
- Familiarity with government information resources and public access policies in the sciences.
- Experience providing guidance to researchers for data, citation and publications management; familiarity with institutional and research assessment goals, as well as research analytics services, author profiles, and citation management software.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
