We are seeking an IT Computing Infrastructure Engineer to assist scientific research staff in the Combustion Research Facility, associated postdocs, and collaborating researchers effectively perform computations and store and handle massive amounts of experimental data using several small and mid-scale high-performance computing clusters. This position includes designing, specifying, purchasing, and installing new computer clusters, maintaining hardware and software associated with existing clusters, safely shutting down and restarting clusters, maintaining cybersecurity logs, maintaining user accounts and establishing job queues, overseeing maintenance and repairs of the cluster room cooling system, and assisting cluster users with porting software to the clusters.

Required:

+ Bachelor's degree with at least five years' relevant experience; or thirteen years' relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Experience maintaining high-performance computing clusters
+ Solid understanding of Linux operating systems (RHEL, Centos, Ubuntu)
+ Knowledge of hardware and operating systems, including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client–server principles
+ Selected applicants will be required to pass a Job Placement Assessment before beginning the job to ensure that they can perform the essential physical requirements, with or without accommodations.
+ Ability to hold a U.S. DOE Q security clearance

Desired:

+ Experience operating in a scientific computing environment
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
+ Experience maintaining system software, including performing software builds, software upgrades, and patch installation as needed
+ Experience with disk and storage systems, such as host-based RAID controllers, software RAID and vendor RAID systems (Network Appliance, LSI, DDN)
+ Batch cluster resource management: Torque, SLURM, PBS, etc.

Department Description:

The Plasma & Reacting Flow Science department at Sandia primarily works on projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science to address needs surrounding both high temperature and low temperature plasma phenomena, combusting flows, reacting gas-solid interfaces, uncertainty quantification (UQ), and related topics such as scientific machine learning. We operate state-of-the-art experimental laboratories, conduct work at the DIII-D tokamak reactor, and utilize both local computer clusters and the DOE Leadership Class supercomputers to conduct massively parallel simulations.
