Senior Microwave Photonics Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking candidates for a Senior Research Engineer position with a background in Microwave Photonics. Chosen candidates will build and expand GTRIs research portfolio in the areas of radar, electronic warfare, and similar electronic systems, and advance the technology readiness level of high-impact technologies. The ideal candidate has excellent communication skills, familiarity with photonic modeling and design tools, and is ready to take on business development responsibilities.

The RF Photonics and Materials (RFPAM) Division currently performs advanced systems research that involves the development of new material technologies, RF photonic and electronic integrated circuits, and RF/millimeter-wave (mmw) devices. These components and sub-systems are used in a variety of systems and applications, primarily for DoD platforms and radar systems.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience.

Principal Research Engineer

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Working knowledge and design experience with microwave photonic theory and components.
  • Working knowledge of and design experience with RF theory and components.
  • Working knowledge of digital signal processing chains for fiber-optic telecom, radar, and/or EW systems.
  • Experience using common optical test equipment (spectrum analyzers, power meters, and signal analyzers).
  • Experience with RF photonic component and system simulation software (RSoft, PhoeniX, or similar).
  • Familiarity with PCB layout tools (Altium Designer, Cadence, or similar).
  • Design, development, and demonstration of microwave photonic experiments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Programming skills in MATLAB, Python, and LabView
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with Linux and open-source tools
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a dynamic team environment
