Senior R&D Geosciences Engineer (Experienced)

We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking R&D, Geosciences Engineer to be a Senior member on our technical staff. Your skills in both earth science and computer/data science will improve our earth sciences-based team. This position will focus on algorithm research and development of advanced computational methods, models, and software to support national security missions in a variety of high-impact areas within the Geosciences Research & Applications group. Earth sciences now demand an ever-increasing need to couple with computer/data sciences including the following: machine learning and deep learning, data science and analytics, modeling and simulation, computational science and mathematics, algorithm design and development, scientific data visualization and software verification and validation.

This position necessitates various interactions across the laboratories, including collaboration with partner organizations and partner projects. In this role, there is significant opportunity for program leadership development, and the selected candidate will be given the opportunity to engage in these development activities both independently and as part of the larger team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop and execute complex surface/subsurface/atmosphere/ocean modeling and simulation tools using large data sets
+ Identify, analyze and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex software and data analytics problems using individual creativity and judgment
+ Apply technical judgment in determining optimal application of computational science practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality product
+ Develop and implement test approaches for large, complex software systems
+ Trouble-shoot, configure, and deploy software systems for end use
+ Develop data-driven models for complex, real-time, physical systems
+ Instill computational efficiency in existing and developed applications

Required:

+ Undergraduate and advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in either earth sciences or computer sciences; or Bachelor's in earth sciences or computer sciences, plus 4 years related experience;
+ Candidate must illustrate professional expertise or formal education in both earth sciences and computer sciences;
+ Proficiency in computer programming languages such as C++, Java, Python, or R;
+ Proven experience with machine learning techniques, especially with large data sets.

Desired:

+ Knowledge of other languages, programs and applications pertinent to earth sciences and general computer expertise such as CSS, JavaScript, HTML, Fortran, Matlab, ArcGIS, etc.;
+ Use of physics-informed or physical constraint approaches to machine learning/computation;
+ Experience in machine learning, statistical inference, data-mining, data-drive frameworks or cloud service analytics; and deep learning model implementations
+ Experience with developing, testing, and deploying code in cloud environments;
+ Experience with agile methodologies and knowledge of Test and/or Behavior Driven Development (TDD/BDD);
+ Familiarity with automated verification and validation techniques and technologies;
+ Experience using Gitlab and CI/CD pipeline, incorporating HPC assets into algorithms
+ History of building, manipulating or using deep-learning algorithms and quantitative uncertainty analysis;
+ Background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real world data, especially large data sets;
+ Expertise in one or more of the following: design and analysis of complex systems, geospatial analysis, decision analysis, risk analysis, energy-water resource management, communications with non-technical audiences, data analytics, machine learning, and optimization;

Department Description:

Sandia National Laboratories' Geotechnology and Engineering department brings analytical earth science expertise for national security projects and commercial/university partnerships. The department is defining Sandia's future quantitative interpretive geology, geomechanical modeling, spatio-temporal data analytics capabilities and wellbore integrity capabilities. Our primary long-term project is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, where we serve as the technical advisors to the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy. Our core competencies include geologic mapping; structural analysis of the underground salt caverns in which the crude oil is stored; well casing analysis and risk assessment; vapor pressure emissions control with crude oil; oil chemistry analysis and implications; salt leaching mitigation strategies; cavern integrity monitoring via detailed and innovative geomechanical modeling; surface subsidence studies; microseismic analysis & monitoring; other activities necessary to safely and effectively operate and maintain the reserve. Our unique capability combinations have a variety of cutting-edge applications including multi-phase fluid flow and engineering; turbulence and shock analysis; water systems analysis; subsurface permeable reactive barrier technologies to remediate water contamination and small-scale projects at remote sites to ensure water availability.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
