Whole Life Engineering has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Senior System Safety Engineer to join us on the Human Systems Integration and Lifecycle Engineering team in Huntsville, AL.

The Whole Life Engineering (WLE) team proactively seeks and applies innovative, customer - focused solutions for superior mission support and system analysis from concept to disposal for new and legacy, domestic and international programs. WLE is made up of several disciplines whose main objective is to influence hardware and systems early in their life cycle to assure effective operation, reliability, system safety, maintainability and economical ownership by the customer and end user.

As a System Safety Engineer, you're an integral participant in the design/development process and will exercise considerable latitude in technical decisions to meet customer requirements. In this role you will work with a multi-disciplinary team responsible for performing safety hazard analyses to identify risks and influence design to eliminate or minimize safety hazards. You will also be responsible for presenting safety results to internal and external stakeholders.

This position can be a Grade G09 or a Grade G10 based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Performing System Safety engineering tasks and analyses, applying technical knowledge to meet Raytheon Missiles & Defense and customer requirements
  • Interpreting system requirements, customer specifications and military standards to develop appropriate safety requirements for hazard mitigation or elimination
  • Design verification (fault tree analyses, hazard analyses, sneak circuit analyses, software system safety analyses)
  • Exercising considerable latitude in technical decisions to meet customer requirements relevant to the System Safety program
  • Preparing internal and customer reports describing various analyses relevant to the System Safety program
  • Representing the System Safety Engineering Department as a key member of the program, responsible for identifying key issues and addressing them to achieve optimal technical solutions
  • Managing one or more System Safety programs; responsibilities include monitoring program technical execution, interfacing with stakeholders (e.g. customers, program offices, subcontractors, vendors, etc.), performing Earned Value Management System tasks and effectively managing System Safety engineering personnel as needed to support program tasks.

This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only US Citizens are eligible for a security clearance.


Required Skills:
  • 6+ years of related experience with system safety engineering, software engineering or system engineering
    • At a Grade G09, 4+ years of experience in the aforementioned areas along with a relevant Master's Degree may be considered for this job.
    • At a G10, 6+ years of experience in the aforementioned areas along with a relevant Master's Degree may be considered for this job.
  • Experience with safety hazard analysis, e.g. software safety, firmware safety, Fault Tree analysis, failure diagnosis and/or corrective action recommendations
  • Project management experience
  • US Citizenship is required

Desired Skills:
  • Experience in performing software safety analysis in compliance with MIL-STD-882E and/or AR 385-17
  • Existing DoD clearance preferred
  • Effective preparation and presentation to Department of Defense Safety Review Boards to include: Software System Safety Technical Review Panel; Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board; Fuze and Initiation System Technical Review Panel; Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board; Non-Nuclear Munitions Safety Board
  • Experience in Rocket Motor Ignition Systems and Fuzing Systems safety requirements and qualifications testing programs (MIL-STD-1901A, MIL-STD-1316 and JOTP-052)
  • Proficiency in performing Sneak Circuit Analysis
  • Strong written, oral and presentation skills to support interface with customers and Safety Review Boards
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage a safety program and provide direction to supporting safety personnel
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Access and Project

Required Education:
  • BS in a STEM discipline or BA in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or Chemistry
