Would you like to play a critical part in the next revolution in human-computer interaction? Contribute to the advancement of a product that is redefining this space, and work with the people who build the intelligent assistant that helps hundreds of millions of people get things done - just by asking. The vision for the Siri Data organization is to improve Siri by using data as the voice of our customers, evolving the product through measurement and analysis of the user experience.

We are looking for a seasoned leader for our Siri Assistant Data Engineering team. As the leader you will build a team of data engineers, and the necessary management structure, to partner with the Analytics team and Siri product engineering teams. You will build datasets and instrumentation frameworks and processes that guide feature development with data, so Siri can be the easier, faster, and safer way to get things done across iPhone, iPad, HomePod, Mac, Watch, tv, CarPlay and AirPods, across dozens of languages and use cases. You will work closely with the Analytics team and lead the planning, execution and success of technical projects as well as help drive scalable practices to accelerate the evolution of Siri. You will manage existing data resources, build new datasets and data pipelines, and implement new technologies and tooling to enable rigorous scalable science and analytics, and data-informed product development. Your team and vision will enable data to inform product engineering teams at scale, with the ultimate purpose of improving the Siri experience for Apple customers across hardware, software and services. You will help drive a strong culture of data excellence!

The person we're looking for has a background that fuses engineering, data, business insight, and great leadership: a strong engineering background, but has always leaned toward empowering data analysis and has years of experience building and leading high-caliber teams who love partnering with others to help products grow. You are a self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity, strong at driving clarity and vision, and enjoy working in a fast-paced dynamic environment and delivering results

Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated passion and leadership in data engineering, data-informed product development, building and shaping data culture
  • Experience building large-scale data processing systems
  • Strong data architecture skills
  • 10 years in a managerial role, growing and scaling organizations
  • Ability to establish strong partnerships with a wide variety of partner teams
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, written and verbal, to all levels of an organization
  • Experience recruiting top talent and scaling an organization
  • Adapting management practices and always growing team members technically and professionally
  • Experience with data processing technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, and Hive
  • Expertise in data engineering partnering with analytics teams (comprised of data scientists and statisticians) to enable horizontal and vertical use cases and agility
  • Technical rigor: ability to develop sustainable solutions for rigorous use of data
  • Demonstrated ability to drive processes across organizations, e.g. to manage creation, processing and use of instrumentation to enable using data impactfully in developing products
  • Proven ability to proactively drive a data engineering agenda and prioritize work based on impact and strategic investment
  • Expertise with various ETL technologies and tools
  • Solid understanding of both relational and NoSQL database technologies
  • You have engineered datasets and metrics out of massive and complex data
  • You have built robust data and analytic pipelines and have a keen eye for where to automate (e.g. Oozie, Airflow)

In this role you will build upon the above key qualifications and:
- Grow and scale a distributed data engineering team and build strong relationships with partner teams
- Enable the data science and product engineering teams who use the datasets, tools and technology built by your team
- Partner with various Siri teams to influence their roadmap
- Build a high-quality Data Warehousing team
- Manage the hardening and launching of new data models and data pipelines in production, including managing data pipeline availability and reliability, establishing SLAs for all datasets and processes running in production
- Partner in the development of well-designed, purposeful instrumentation of the customer experience so that data can inform Siri's evolution, including processes, collaborations, and technologies necessary to do this at scale
- Educate on and evangelize best practices
- Build team capabilities (through hiring, training, tools, and process) that enable high quality scalable trusted work products, with a keen focus on engineering excellence and data quality
- Stay focused and prioritize a heavy workload while achieving exceptional quality and driving long term vision

You know how to:
- Recruit, hire and nurture people who are not only great technically but also demonstrate success in the highly collaborative, functional environment of innovation at Apple
- Lead a distributed team while keeping them connected, collaborating, inspired; whereby they understand how their work ladders into the bigger picture, mission, and vision
- Model detailed thinking and crisp communication
- Give crisp feedback to your team that balances opportunities for growth with vision to inspire
- Assess difficult trade-offs, triage, and know that sometimes moving slowly now is critical to unlocking fast progress later
- Work in service of something larger without creating a service org. Your team can deliver what is needed but also redefine what is possible
- You are humble and lead by example. You have compassion for your colleagues and the challenges they face but can drive a controversial direction when needed
- You care about craft and you can identify when love of craft is getting in the way of impact
- Move up and down the ladder of abstraction and help your team do so as well. You can talk and design on technical matters but are always able to connect that work to the impact it is in service of
