Information about the role

The Social Media Manager leads the Marketing Communications (MarCom) social media team in the development and implementation of data-informed social media strategies that support the Museum’s overall vision and mission, as well as advance specific priorities and projects.

Leveraging deep technical knowledge of social media platforms, analytics and best practices, the MarCom Social Media Manager will be responsible for overseeing the primary functions of social media planning and execution while protecting the Museum’s reputational integrity on social media.

This position resides in the New Audience Engagement & Membership (NAEM) division.

This is a full-time donated position (non-Federal) paid with the Museum’s private funds. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Duties, and Responsibilities for the role

Supervision of NAEM social media branch to:

  • Foster a collaborative team environment, providing oversight and guidance to help the team produce quality work in an integrated, professional manner
  • Assign/allocate MarCom social team talent and resources
  • Conduct routine check-ins with team and provides effective, real-time feedback
  • Mentor staff to further advance their technical skillsets

MarCom Social Media team lead to:

  • Serve as main point of contact for MarCom social media inquiries
  • Develop standardized workflows and systems to ensure creation and publishing of relevant, original, high-quality content for all social channels
  • Administrative, managerial and technical expert for Museum social media tools and platforms, creating uniform structures, documented processes and oversight for optimal channel use

Social media strategic advisor across Museum Offices, Divisions and Branches to:

  • Identify and leverage appropriate opportunities for awareness and engagement while incorporating best practices (such as targeting, boosting & paid advertising)
  • Guide consensus and prioritization among colleagues, subject matter experts and stakeholders regarding competing social media needs and priorities

Develop and evaluate KPIs for social channels, initiatives, and programs to analyze performance and inform decision making for future social communications, by:

  • Providing detailed, actionable analysis and insights
  • Communicating high-level summaries to executive level staff members and key stakeholders
  • Evaluating the overall health of the Museum’s social strategies through review and continuous assessment of platform-level metrics
  • In conjunction with MarCom analytics team, lead reporting that demonstrates measurable outcomes for specialized program- or project-focused social media campaigns and efforts
  • Assess and revise Museum social media policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with evolving digital environment. Educate and communicate changes with staff, in partnership with General Counsel and other appropriate stakeholders
  • Research current and emerging social media trends to target new opportunities for growth across channels, including social listening

Ongoing Responsibilities:

  • Produces and deploys social media content for primary Museum social channels: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Executes the institution-wide social media editorial calendar, in collaboration with other stakeholders to ensure a holistic view is maintained
  • Collaborates to manage and monitor community conversations across social channels, including engaging with user generated content as appropriate
  • Creates and executes social media plans to leverage timely and appropriate opportunities for engagement and growth, incorporating best practices and planning
  • Works with Museum program offices to research, identify, and execute audience-specific promotion across social media channels
  • Follows strict editorial and style guides and review process, historical accuracy and copyrights for historical photo and video assets, and recommends changes where necessary


Minimum Qualifications for the role

  • 5 years of work experience across a broad range of social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn
  • 3 years of experience in developing, leading and managing a team of direct reports
  • Strong knowledge of social media publishing tools, metrics and analytics such as Sprout Social, Airtable, Sketch, Tweet Deck and native platforms
  • Experience using Google Analytics to track, measure and optimize marketing campaigns
  • Experience creating and strategizing paid social media campaigns and ad plans including targeting, boosting and paid social media ads
  • Deep knowledge of social media best practices
  • Strong editorial and communication skills, especially as it relates to sharing social media insights and expertise to external audiences/other Museum departments
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and communicate progress
  • Ability to meet deadlines on a daily basis
  • Highly organized
