Job Description

GTRI/CIPHER seeks a highly motivated individual with 0-7 years of work experience to support wireless network vulnerability analysis and exploitation. The candidate will perform research developing algorithms and using SDRs to demodulate and analyze RF communication signals, and may also perform research discovering and analyzing security vulnerabilities associated with a wide variety of wireless communication systems. Technical disciplines that may be required in these efforts include test, evaluation and reverse engineering of RF communications systems; development of software defined radio (SDR) algorithms to support reverse engineering and testing; communications theory; RF signal collection and analysis; communication protocol analysis; and countermeasures and vulnerability analysis for RF communication systems. 

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • If not in possession of a Master's degree, ability to earn a Master’s degree within five years of employment
  • Software defined radio experience is required
  • Experience using and developing transmit/receive algorithms for software defined radios (such as X-MIDAS, GNU radio, Redhawk, Matlab)
  • Familiarity with design and/or testing of RF communications systems
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience with software reverse engineering, computer programming, or working with test and measurement equipment
  • Experience with design and/or testing of RF communications devices
  • Experience with developing countermeasures against RF communications systems (jamming, spoofing, replay attacks, etc.)
  • Experience with software reverse engineering tools (IDAPro, advanced debuggers, etc.)
  • Familiarity working with test and measurement equipment such as spectrum analyzers and logic analyzers
  • Familiarity with a variety of modulation and coding schemes
  • Familiarity with frequency hop communications systems
  • Familiarity with communication protocols used in military RF communication systems
  • Familiarity with security features associated with RF communication systems
  • Experience working with the U.S. government, including the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community
  • Final TS clearance and DCID 6-4 for SCI eligibility

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
