Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) System Engineering Division (SEN) is currently seeking a Signal Processing/Software Development Engineer for a full time research faculty position in the Open Systems Development Branch (OSDB). OSDB enables the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) across the Department of Defense (DoD) through modeling open architecture reference systems, developing systems based on open architectures, and open architecture standards development. The candidate will help implement digital signal processing algorithms in order to support the development of Ultra-Wide Bandwidth software defined radio (SDR) electronic warfare systems utilizing open standards such as VITA 49.2 and SOSA, and define guidance for future development and standardization.


  • Develop digital signal processing algorithms across heterogeneous hardware platforms (CPUs, GPUs, DSPs, FPGAs, etc) for SDR systems
  • Conduct test and evaluation engineering of RF systems
  • Develop software for RF signal collection and analysis
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and standards for use in SDR systems
  • Analyze countermeasures and vulnerability for RF systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering or related field.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • GPU/GPGPU programming experience (using OpenCL, CUDA, etc.)
  • Experience developing technical reports and presentations
  • Familiarity with integration and troubleshooting of complex systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • FPGA development experience (VHDL)
  • RFSoC development experience
  • Familiarity with VITA 49.2 or Modular Open Radio Frequency Architecture (MORA)
  • Experience using and developing transmit/receive algorithms for software defined radios (such as X-MIDAS, GNU Radio, Redhawk, Matlab, VITA 49/MORA)
  • Experience with design and/or testing of RF devices and communication systems
  • Experience developing systems for military applications (e.g. avionics, GPS, EW, Communications)
  • Experience with communication protocols used in military RF communication systems
  • Experience with developing countermeasures against RF communications systems (jamming, spoofing, replay attacks, etc.)
  • Experience working with DoD and/or Intelligence Community
  • Active SECRET clearance

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
