Job Description:

This position is for a Software Products Engineering (SPE) Sensors Center Director. The Center Director (CD) will report directly to the SPE Leader and will work collaboratively as a member of the SPE Leadership Team. Individual will utilize their influential leadership to work collaboratively internal to the SPE organization, upward to all levels of RMD Senior Leadership and across the enterprise. The CD will lead the technical execution of the center as a recognized technical authority across a products life cycle within the Directorate and by instilling a philosophy of collaboration across the Directorate that aligns expectations to our customers within Engineering, the Programs, and external customer. The Center Director will work with the Software Products Leader performing tactical leadership to ensure program success as well as to provide the strategic direction for the organization. The Center Director will need to be an effective communicator, leader, task executer, and decision maker, as well as a strong advocate for process improvement, diversity in the work force, staff development, and high professional standards.

This position can be located at any major RMD location and will require up to 10% travel. The preferred location is Tewksbury, MA. Therefore, relocation will be offered to any candidate not located in Tewksbury but willing to relocate.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Technical and managerial leadership of a center of approx. 650 software engineers. Responsible for the Sensors center within Software Products Engineering.
  • Leader of leaders for several departments providing primary point of contact for RMD Program leadership and Chief Engineers for Sensors programs.
  • Drive a high level of collaboration within SPE and across engineering to ensure successful architecture, design and development of software that meets technical, schedule, and cost requirements
  • Partnering with Software Products Leader to develop and implement strategic initiatives with program, engineering, and other internal and external customers to provide affordable solutions that ensure the highest quality software solutions
  • Define and enable a capability within the Center to be highly productive in supporting and developing advanced solutions
  • Engage in capture efforts (proposals) and drive business innovation and technology innovation to create solutions that surpass expectations of our customers
  • Perform assessments and support of proposal/bids, Basis of Estimates reviews, and directorate level reviews
  • Define and drive process scaling in order to match the Center's execution to the acceptable risk profile of each individual program or project
  • Define and establish the vision for talent development that strengthens our capabilities of technical capabilities across the product life cycle that supports the emerging technical and business roadmaps for the company
  • Actively engages in cross business activities such as Agile initiatives and Talent Acquisition. Additionally influential in collaborating with peers across the businesses and in advancing the art of software development across the company
  • Partner with Department Leaders to achieve program/functional cost/technical/schedule goals and aid in resolution to programmatic and functional issues
  • Support program Independent Reviews and engage Subject Matter Experts wherever necessary
  • Support the Software Products Leader in the Performance Business Execution Reviews, Center workforce planning, management of overhead expenses, execution of RMD & SPE initiatives, and continuous process deployment and improvements
  • Manage Center staff meetings, support the definition and planning of All Hands and other events
  • Ensure a diverse and inclusive culture of respect and trust
  • Support the development of roadmaps for the center
Required Skills:
  • Minimum of 14 years' experience in utilizing overall Software technology and systems
  • B.S./B.A. Degree with a major in Engineering, Science, Math, Physics, or related degree
  • Experience in leading an organization of 100+ people
  • Demonstrated experience in financial planning and budgeting, as well as experience assessing and managing risk
  • Experience working with all levels of leadership and external customers
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Secret Department of Defense (DoD) Clearance and must be able to obtain higher level clearance and access to proprietary programs.

Desired Skills:
  • A minimum of 10 years of software engineering experience within the defense industry
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related degree
  • Experience leading and working in a matrix engineering organization using abilities to effectively partner and work with senior leadership, engineering, programs and external customers, while driving the organizational performance and excellence
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cultural and organizational change
  • Strong passion and vision to improve organization effectiveness through strategic planning
  • Experience leading multi-disciplined efforts
  • External experience to draw from to create innovative solutions for running the business
  • Strong execution skills
  • Able to network/influence both internal and externally to SPE directorate
  • Understands & champions effective talent development
  • Experience in functional and/or program leadership: including Department Leader, Section Leader or major Integrated Product Team lead
  • Past management experience working with all levels of management including an engineering leadership team, business area managers/executives within the corporation, as well as with senior customer personnel
  • Experience in risk/opportunity management with strong understanding of RTX Integrated Product Development System (IPDS) gates and processes
  • Understanding of Earned Value metrics (CPI, SPI, TCPI, BAC, EAC, LRE, etc.)
  • Experience developing proposals/bids including generation of cost/technical Basis of Estimates
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills
