CIPHER conducts applied research focused on cyber threats and countermeasures, secure multi-level information sharing, resilient command and control network architectures, reverse engineering, vulnerability identification, and high performance computing and analytics. CIPHER engineers develop and apply cutting edge technologies in computing, network architectures, signal and protocol analysis, network forensics, malware analysis, and reverse engineering (hardware and software) to solve the tough problems. The GTRI-CIPHER IT team is seeking a Full Stack Web Developer or Software Engineer to join our Application Support Team (AST). The AST team is embedded within the CIPHER IT team, which supports over 350 researchers, engineers, and support staff tackling complex and novel IT challenges for commercial and government customers. The CIPHER IT team is distributed across multiple campus buildings and supports a sizable base of remote users across the United States. The position would report to the AST Team Lead, as well as interface cross-functionally with other members of the CIPHER IT team and the CIPHER laboratory.

Outside of internal operations, the candidate is expected to actively participate in sponsored research programs across the laboratory above and beyond providing technology support. Many of GTRI-CIPHERs programs require sophisticated information technology platforms and, as such, this AST Software Engineer will be required to hold a Department of Defense Secret clearance.

Job Duties

You will be a key member in the development and implementation of GTRI/CIPHER IT Infrastructure applications and information systems. The CIPHER IT Architecture and Infrastructure AST team focuses on: application development; web and mobile services, configuration management tools, data integrations, database administration, and DevSecOps; Expect to work closely with leadership, stakeholders, and CIPHER Project/Process Management to effectively translate business strategy and objectives into technological capability. This role is specific to the CIPHER IT team.

This position will interact on a regular basis with: Staff, third party vendors, and service providers.

Key Responsibilities include the following:

  • Develop visually appealing front end website architecture, including translating mock-ups and wireframes into front-end code
  • Develop functional databases, applications, and servers to support websites on the back end
  • Develop and implement Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
  • Review peer-developed code to ensure conformance with coding standards, accuracy in implemented logic, and proficiency in implementation approach
  • Design, implement and execute automated tests, both unit, and integration tests, to verify software functionality
  • Grow expertise in software architectural frameworks, methods, and tools
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline.

Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's degree with a graduation date of May,2021 and skills relevant to this position will be considered.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with web application management
  • Experience with at least two of the following: Node.JS, React, JavaScript, Java, PHP, Python
  • Experience with a configuration management system (e.g. GIT)
  • Experience with API integration
  • Experience with at least one of the following: MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Atlassian stack
  • Experience with Data ETL (extract/transform/load)
  • Experience with virtualization and container software (e.g. Docker, OKD, OpenShift, Vagrant, Kubernetes, Rancher, Amazon Web Services, Azure DevOps)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline
  • Knowledge of the entire SDLC
  • Familiarity with UI/UX design

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
