Job Description

A full-time, permanent position is available starting in June 2021 for an Software Engineer in the Software Engineering and Analytics Division (SEAD) of the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). The role will support research on sponsored Army Family, CDC UARC, and ARAT projects. The projects are based out of the Coda building area in Atlanta on the Georgia Tech campus. Currently, the team is working remotely, but plan to return to the office eventually. Occasional travel may be required and is project dependent.

As a Software Engineer, we expect the candidate to develop and test software; additionally manage software development teams, provide technical leadership, establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The candidate should be proficient in programming languages such as Java, C, C++, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. This role requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, continuous integration, continuous delivery, DevOps, API development, container development, and distributed systems. A good candidate should apply engineering principles to software creation, manage production releases of software, perform code reviews, merge feature development branches, and analyze and triage issues.

Necessary skill areas: Programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, design and architecture, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, debugging software, testing software, and working in development teams. Works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.

Your primary tasks will include:

  • Perform software development, software debugging, software modification / enhancement, and software documentation.
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations
  • Design, test, and develop computer software in order to meet requirements.
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts
  • Contribute to research reports, white papers, and competitive proposals
  • Apply expertise in computing systems, software structure to software planning, requirements, and development. Base software structure and design on the recognized limitations of hardware platform.
  • Create and analyze network protocols

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, information systems, or a related field
  • 3 years experience or more in professional software development
  • The candidate should be familiar with software development concepts such as source control, agile development, and good coding practices
  • Professional experience with use of Java (3+ years)
  • 2+ years of professional experience with Angular
  • Experience using GIT and Confluence
  • Experience with leading small (2-3 person) software development teams

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required minimum qualifications,

  • Relevant experience in applied research and development
  • DOD and/or Federal Software Development Experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a dynamic team environment

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
