Software Quality Engineer - (Experienced)

Perform lead role in developing and maintaining the Nuclear Safety Software Quality requirements for the Technical Area V \(TA\-V\)\. You will support the programmatic needs for engineers, physicists, safety analysts, and other users of safety related software and associated tools for the Nuclear Facility & Applied Technologies group and the Radiation & Electrical Sciences Center\. You will conduct the annual safety software inventory for TA\-V and maintain configuration of the software throughout its lifecycle\. You will communicate with partners, regulators, engineers, and nuclear operators to ensure software is adequately performing its proper function and is documented in accordance with requirements of DOE 414\.1D, Quality Assurance\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Review software systems design, change specifications, and plans against project or process requirements

Develop, modify, and execute software test plans and analyze and write test standards and procedures

Use systematic tests to identify software defects, analyze results to ensure existing functionality, and recommend corrective action,

including isolating, reproducing, tracking, and fixing bugs

Consult with development engineers to resolve problems and provide feedback for use in technical appraisals of programming languages,

systems, and computation software

Maintain, modify and assist in the creation of test environments and configurations to meet test cases or problem requirements

Document test results to assist in debugging and modifying software

Define appropriate measures to ensure the quality and serviceability of new features and releases of deliverable software


Requires a bachelor's degree plus five or more years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Demonstrated knowledge of software development methodologies throughout the software lifecycle

Fundamental understanding of quality principles, methods, tools, and standards and experience in quality engineering processes\.

Experience with quality standards \(e\.g\., NQA\-1, NAP24A, ISO\-9000, ANSI, IEEE\)

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance


Experience in leading safety software development projects in field applications\.

Experience in using modern programming languages, operating systems, and system device interfaces

Proficiency in hardware, software, or operating systems environments

Ability to apply project management principles and techniques to software project planning, implementation, and tracking\.

Certification in Project Management, Agile Project Management, ASQ Software Quality Engineer is a plus

Demonstrated experience in software system procurement, inspection, and evaluation

Basic understanding of configuration management processes

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Department Description:

Group 1380, Nuclear Facility Operations and Applied Nuclear Technologies \(Technical Area \- V\), operates four unique nuclear facilities and conducts radiation effects research and analysis supporting the mission of Sandia National Laboratories \(SNL\) and the nation's interest\. The operation of the Annular Core Research Reactor \(ACRR\), the Sandia Pulsed Reactor\-Critical Experiments \(SPR\-CX\), the Gamma Irradiation Facility \(GIF\) and the Auxiliary Hot Cell Facility \(AHCF\), as well as the Radiation Metrology Lab \(RML\) play a vital role in SNL's strategic mission\. The Nuclear Quality and Requirements Department \(1382\) is responsible for managing the effective implementation of the elements of 10CFR830 Nuclear Safety Subpart A, Quality Assurance criteria across TA\-V programs, policies, processes and procedures\. The department also manages the TA\-V Training, Requirements, Assurance, and Information Management programs for TA\-V Nuclear Facility Operations\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
