BGS is an Engineering, Technology, and Security firm delivering mission-focused solutions for challenging government programs, projects, and operations.  We currently have an opening for an Solar Grid Integration Electrical Engineer in Washington, DC .

BGS is seeking a highly motivated engineer to support federal research and development (R&D) programs in solar grid integration in the Department of Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO). The successful candidate shall possess a strong academic background in electrical engineering and have demonstrated real world experience in at least two of the following areas: (1) power electronics design; (2) electric power systems planning and operation; (3) renewable energy generation; (4) smart grid; (5) industrial control and automation; and (6) energy storage.

The SETO Systems Integration subprogram supports R&D in high impact technologies and solutions that enable the reliable, resilient, and secure integration of solar energy on the nation’s electricity grid.  

Working in an integrated team environment and supporting a federal client, the candidate will be responsible for technology management of a portfolio of R&D projects. The candidate will also contribute and/or lead the development of new research initiatives to advance the state-of-the-arts.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the technology expert to evaluate technology area portfolios, conduct gap analysis, and develop strategic roadmaps. 
  • Contribute and/or lead the planning of new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) including program concepts, requirement documents, workshops, merit reviews, briefings, and award negotiations.
  • Perform active project management to ensure that projects make progress toward stated objectives and meet milestones and deliverables. Conduct quarterly, phase, and final project reviews and site visits.
  • Provide clear guidance to awardees in regard to expectation and progress assessment. Resolve conflict and develop corrective actions when situations arise.
  • Stay abreast of technology fields and proactively engage stakeholders (federal agencies, national laboratories, industry, academia, non-profits and others) for inputs and disseminating results.
  • Organize, attend, or present at conferences, workshops, and other events.


Years of Professional Experience :

5 years w/ Bachelor’s Degree
3 plus years w/ Master’s Degree

1 plus years w/ Ph.D. Degree

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or in related fields of study in engineering or physical sciences. Ph.D. is preferred.
  • An additional business degree is a plus.
  • 2-5 years direct experience in relevant field such as power electronics, renewable energy, and/or smart grid.
  • 2-5 years direct experience in project or program management
  • Demonstrated strong engineering, analytical and scientific skills to aggressively attack complex scientific and engineering problems with a multidisciplinary, system engineering approach.
  • Demonstrated prior research accomplishments through patents and/or publications.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to clearly articulate and defend the problem statement, the technical approaches, and expected impacts of the solutions.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized individual with ability to adapt and respond quickly in a fast-paced environment. Work effectively as an individual contributor and in a team.
  • Experience with technology commercialization is a plus.
  • Experience in the research of, or analyzing the deployment of a wide range of energy efficiency technologies and systems. Experience in establishing specific project rankings and selection recommendations among competing scientific approaches.
  • Authorized to work in the United States with no restrictions; U.S. Citizen or Permanent US Resident.


Full time position; must be willing to work in downtown Washington DC; must be willing to travel on an as-needed basis.
