Job Description:

AMA is currently accepting applications to a Solid Mechanics Engineer position to lead world class research with a team of engineers and scientists at the NASA Ames Research Center (ARC). The qualified candidate will be an experienced research engineer/scientist with an advanced degree in aerospace engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or similar to support modeling of materials at the meso-to-microscale.

The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team to prognose the reliability and failure of advanced composites (fiber reinforced materials, ceramic-metal composites, and ceramic-ceramic composites) under extreme mechanical and thermal loads. The successful applicant will use advanced computational methods (e.g., discrete dislocation dynamics, phase field modeling, peridynamics, finite element, etc.) to characterize plastic deformation and fracture phenomena in composites. Ideally, the applicant will have experience incorporating results from experiments and nanoscale simulations into their work. The successful applicant will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of computational and experimental researchers at NASA Ames Research Center to make progress in this area.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform simulations or develop constitutive models to characterize plastic deformation, fracture initiated from impacts, and fracture propagation
  • Collaborate with experimentalists to verify computational results on material performance
  • Disseminate research through presentations and publications
  • Meet dynamic, project-driven needs in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment
  • Work as part of a collaborative Computational Materials team at NASA Ames to advance state of the art methods and approaches

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in computational modeling
  • Strong theoretical background and scientific programming experience
  • Experience presenting scientific results to multi-disciplinary teams which can be made up of experimental and computational scientists

Desired Experience:

  • Experience with hydrogen embrittlement
  • Modeling solid and gaseous species diffusion
  • Modeling material creep/solid flow in environments with elevated temperatures/pressures
  • Direct experience with utilizing microstructure imagery (such as EBSD scans) to develop and validate microstructure models.

Due to the work requirements, this job is open to US Citizens and US Legal Permanent Residents only.
