Overview:

The Centrifuge Engineering and Fabrication Section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Senior researcher in the area of Solid Mechanics for the Modeling and Data Science Group.  The Senior Solid Mechanics Researcher will develop analysis approaches and perform analysis on the mechanical components of gas centrifuges in support of centrifuge research and development (R&D), design activities, and troubleshooting of experimental and test facilities. 

Purpose:

The ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments. The Modeling and Data Science Group applies first principles and empirical approaches to advance the physics and engineering understanding of gas centrifuges using computational tools such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), FEA, and data analysis.  The successful Senior Solid Mechanics Researcher candidate will provide R&D leadership to the group in the area of solid mechanics as applied to gas centrifuges for processing uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Establish and conduct research within the field of solid mechanics as it relates to gas centrifuge and enrichment technologies
  • Serve as a thought leader in the area of solid mechanics for the group, section, and directorate
  • Lead R&D, design, and experimental troubleshooting activities.
  • Serve as a mentor for junior technical staff
  • Interact with sponsors to define, execute, and report on relevant project elements.
  • Actively collaborate with domain experts from U.S. government laboratories and academia involved in similar efforts
  • Publish high quality research results in peer-reviewed open or classified journals and conferences, if authorized by the sponsoring agency
  • Publish and present non-sensitive research in journals and conferences
  • Develop proposals for cutting edge research and funding 

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, physics, or a related field and at least six years of relevant post-graduate experience
  • Experience in in solid mechanics research and applications, explicitly in analyzing mechanical systems for stress, strain, and vibration (natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping), using finite element methods
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in research and applications of strength of materials, vibrations, heat transfer, fluid-structure interaction, rotor dynamics, magnetic analysis, and materials.
  • Experience with finite element code development and application.
  • Experience with modeling rotating equipment.
  • A proven record of application development for performing stress/strain, deflection, vibrations, heat transfer, fluid-structure interaction, rotor dynamics, and magnetic analysis.
  • An understanding and experience in analyzing dynamic testing data to extract information from the collected data.
  • Experience and understanding of material testing techniques and the use of these tests to extract material properties.
  • A record of significant technical publications.
  • Excellent communication (spoken and written), strategic planning, organization, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated prior leadership experience.
  • Experience with ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar FEA tools.
  • Experience with MATLAB, C++, or Python.
