The Senior Compliance Engineer is responsible for driving product safety design and certification efforts for Veeco’s Lithography and Laser Processing products to ensure that they meet the applicable safety standards, including SEMI S2/S8, CE, UL, NFPA, KC and RoHS/REACH. The Compliance Engineer will partner with new product development program managers and engineers, providing guidance on applicable standards and designing to meet those standards, as well as completing hands-on work performing risk assessments on equipment, coordinating third-party evaluations of products and driving successful closure of any findings and successful product certification. He/she will also play a critical role in ensuring that Veeco’s products post-release continue to meet evolving safety standards and regulations, as well as incorporating any learnings from field data into continuous product improvements. The successful candidate will have good working knowledge of the applicable standards, coupled with the ability to coordinate and drive efforts to meet those standards, working collaboratively with new product development engineers.


  • Drive conformance to safety and regulatory compliance requirements for new products cited in the Veeco ISO safety policy, and applicable international industry safety standards, including SEMI S2 / CE / UL/ KC, working with the NPD teams and aligned with the product development schedules
  • Participate in design reviews & provide direction to engineers on design-for-safety and on meeting specific safety and regulatory compliance requirements, including guidance on selection of parts compliant to RoHS, REACH, KC-S and other applicable regulatory requirements
  • Participate in risk assessments (per EN12100/SEMI S10) and Process Hazard Analyses with NPD engineers on new products in development. Provide direction to engineers on addressing highest risk items
  • Complete internal safety audits of prototypes and alpha/beta systems for safety and regulatory compliance. Create findings lists and provide direction to engineers on how to correct issues found
  • Drive the closure of issues and risks identified through internal audits, Risk Assessments and PHAs
  • Partner with engineering to identify Critical-to-Safety parts and create the Critical Components List
  • Coordinate, schedule and facilitate third-party safety testing and evaluation
  • Create, collect and organize the Technical File in support of applicable certifications and submit to third-party certifying organization. Maintain Technical File in product documentation management system.
  • Respond to findings from third-part reviews and testing. Drive successful closure of findings, attainment of certification to applicable standards, and issuance of final reports.
  • Provide guidance and direction on maintaining adherence to relevant safety and regulatory standards, including upcoming changes to applicable standards. Respond to inquiries on part or system compliance.
  • Manage and maintain CDRH reports for lasers, working with third party as needed. Complete annual filings
  • Review engineering change orders on critical-to -safety parts to assess the level of risk and ensure that appropriate validation is completed prior to releasing the change
  • Participate in any product safety escalations and provide guidance on containment and corrective actions
  • Perform pre-shipment audits of select systems to ensure adherence to the designed-in safety-features, including labeling, guards, interlocks and other safety-related features
  • Assist with FMEA’s (Failure Mode and Effects Analyses) for reliability



Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Systems or a related engineering area is required. At least 8 years of experience in Regulatory and Compliance Engineering is also required, preferably in the Semiconductor equipment area.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Detailed working knowledge of and expertise in the application of SEMI S2/S8/S10/S22, CE Machinery & EMC Directives, NFPA 79, EN12100, EN13849, IEC 60204-33, REACH (SVHC) and ROHS Directives
  • Prior experience working with third-party agencies in the testing and certification of new products
  • Proven track record of driving compliance activities and certifications on new products on time
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all levels of the organization, distilling complex technical information into salient points that can be easily understood by non-compliance personnel
  • Ability to provide clear direction to engineers on compliance-related design issues
  • Strong written and verbal English language skills
  • Team player with a willingness to take ownership, and a drive to ensure product safety
