Whole Life Engineering (WLE) is a member of the systems engineering organization. WLEs main objective is to influence hardware, software and systems throughout all phases of a systems life cycle to assure effective operation, reliability and economical ownership by the customer and end users.

The System Safety Department sets system requirements, analyzes design, assesses test data, reviews operating and maintenance manuals and assess risk via hazard analyses and software and firmware safety programs. System safety provides assurance to our employees, customers and end users that our products safely perform their required mission functions throughout their lifecycle while meeting cost and schedule requirements.

The System Safety Department is a stable, employee-focused team operating in a dynamic, change-oriented environment. We analyze missile and defense programs at a component and system level to identify, eliminate or mitigate hazards, As a team member youll collaborate across departments, including Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), Supply Chain, Operations, Test & Integration and Production.

As a Sr. Principal System Safety Engineer, youre a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) and technical advisor within the System Safety Engineering Department. In addition, youll lead our System Safety program efforts by identifying key safety issues and addressing them with optimal technical solutions as well as providing direction and mentoring to junior system safety engineers.

General Responsibilities Include:

  • Review other engineers analyses of: engineering hardware, electrical drawings and schematics assessing fault tolerance, latent hazards and safety requirements compliance
  • Review test and tactical operating and maintenance procedures to ensure proper administrative controls are in place
  • Work across integrated product teams and lines to gain safety approval
  • Execute system safety program tasks and serve as SME or Safety Lead to one or more programs
  • Collaborate with Program Management and Integrated Product Team Leads across Engineering, EH&S, Supply Chain, Operations and government approval authorities as well as coworkers and external Program customers
  • Prepare for and present Safety program results to appropriate DoD system safety review boards

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • System Safety engineering tasks and analyses, applying technical knowledge to meet RTX and customer safety program requirements
  • Interpret system requirements, customer specifications and military standards to develop appropriate safety requirements for hazard mitigation or elimination
  • Design influence and verification using fault tree, hazard, sneak circuit and software and firmware safety analyses.
  • Collaborate with multiple disciplines to gain a full understanding of product architecture and design
  • Manage large or multiple mid-to-small sized System Safety programs. Responsibilities include:
    • Monitoring program technical execution, interfacing with stakeholders (customer, program, subcontractor, vendor)
    • Performing Earned Value Management System tasks and managing System Safety engineering personnel to support program tasks
  • SME of a technical system safety area (energetics, battery safety, Handling, Storage and Transport, Software Safety, or other technical subject)
    • Technical Advisor to WLE and Mission Area Chief Engineers on matters relating to System Safety Engineering
    • Assist with gaining customer safety approval for test or deployment

This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only US Citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Required Skills:
  • 10+ years related system engineering or system safety engineering experience
    • 8+ years experience in the aforementioned areas and a relevant Master's Degree may be considered
  • Experience with hazard analysis, e.g. software or firmware safety, Fault Tree analysis, failure diagnosis or corrective action recommendations
  • Experience with DoD Safety Review Boards or equivalent experience gaining customer safety approval (e.g. UK Safety Case Approval, FDA medical device approval)
  • Team leadership experience
  • US Citizenship

    Desired Skills:
  • Experience with Rocket Motor Ignition Systems and Fuzing Systems safety requirements and qualifications testing programs (MIL-STD-1901A, MIL-STD-1316 and JOTP-052)
  • Experience with MIL-STD-882E System Safety management tasks and methodologies, MIL-STD-882E hazard analyses, software and firmware system safety
  • Experience presenting to Defense Dept. Safety Review Boards (Software System Safety Technical Review Panel; Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board; Fuze and Initiation System Technical Review Panel; DoD Explosives Safety Board; Non-Nuclear Munitions Safety Board)
  • Experience with Emotional Intelligence concepts, techniques
  • Familiarity with Insensitive Munitions activities, dangerous goods transportation, Explosive Hazard Classification, U.S. Government test range safety requirements, Explosive Ordnance Disposal data, and system safety tool sets.
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills and ability to manage a safety program and provide direction to supporting personnel
  • Strong written and presentation skills
