The applicant will design substations engineering meter, control and relaying projects, including design of physical plant part of the projects involving physical design of switchgear, equipment configuration, layout drawings and erection details, etc. This position will report to an Engineering Supervisor in Substations Engineering at SMT, downtown Seattle.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a project engineer on substation switchgear replacements, retrofits, expansion and maintenance projects in 115kV and 230kV substations.
  • Independently lead meter, control and relaying substation projects, including some drafting as needed.
  • Orders materials, coordinate with other engineering groups, prepare specifications, monitor progress, conduct meetings, visit sites, prepare drawings, bill of material, interpret standards, assist crews, prepare design and test memoranda, etc.
  • Performs project estimates, prepare procurement documents, monitor contracts, lead projects to completion.
  • Other responsibilities include physical plant design of the projects; to prepare and issue installation drawings for switchgear, transformer, instrument transformer, battery, bus, grounding, switch, surge arrester and capacitor installations in high voltage substations.
  • Assists with NERC compliance by updating and determining substation equipment and conductor ratings.
  • Develops and update computer analysis programs or tracking systems for appropriate projects.
  • Prepares drawings of plans and details manually or with computer-aided drafting and design applications.
  • Participates in presentations, special projects and assignments as directed.
  • Monitors progress of construction projects.
  • Reviews final plans, specifications, special conditions and agreements and coordinates the work of electrical contractors, affected public agencies, and crews.
  • Recommends for approval contract change orders and payments.
  • Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Requirements

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional electrical engineering work.

Experience:

Requires three years of professional electrical engineering experience.

Certification/License:

Valid Washington State Driver's License.

Desired Qualifications:

Previous substation or generation yard high-voltage design experience, including equipment purchase, replacements, physical design, knowledge of design standards, ability to lead projects, good oral and written communication skills.
