Job Title: Substation Program Manager


Location: Charlotte, NC


Job Summary and Description:

Manages multiple programs or projects with emphasis on developing the priorities and strategy for the area managed, deployment and development of EPRI staff and the financial success of the area(s).  Also responsible for developing/implementing the R&D deployment strategy for the area(s).

  • Accountable for management of one or more technical programs.
  • Responsible for technical and financial results produces by a program.
  • Accountable for succession strategies, hiring of staff in supervised programs, performance management, and development planning.
  • Identifies the most qualified internal and contractor team to complete the work.  Selects contractors, frames statements of work. 
  • Directs the work of the team to assure technical and financial milestones are met.
  • Responsible for employee selection, performance management, and development planning.
  • Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. 
  • Provides guidance to staff within the latitude of company policy.
  • May be responsible for the program level advisory structure.



Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field. PE or equivalent experience required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven leadership and management capability overseeing an R&D Program.
  • Works with limited supervision
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Responsible for funding, spending and workforce planning in program area.
  • Is directly responsible for leading one or more staff including goal setting and performance management
  • Works directly with member advisors to ensure member engagement and guidance.
  • Presents Program content, value and R&D at member locations and with member leadership
  • May present program activities to the Sector Council
  • Has working knowledge of the various Sector programs, strategy and values and aligns Program activities to support cross program participation.


Additional Job Information:

  • Leads team of in-house engineers, subject matter experts and outside contractors
  • Presents technical results and lead task force meetings
  • Presents Program content, value and R&D at member locations and advisory meetings
  • Able to work with minimal direction and supervision
  • Maintains balanced research portfolio with high value short, medium and long term research tasks and deliverables
  • Works with technical staff and utility members to help identify, create and transfer value
  • Responsible for funding, spending and workforce planning in program area. 
  • Is directly responsible for leading one or more staff including goal setting and performance management
  • Works directly with member advisers to ensure member engagement and guidance.

  • Possesses subject matter expertise in one or more substation assets
  • Exhibits expert credibility when communicating with peers and EPRI members
  • Strong project management skills, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills – written, verbal and presentation
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Works well as as team player and as team leader
