Synthesis of High Pressure Phases - Postdoctoral Researcher

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the synthesis of High Pressure ceramic and mineralogical phases. You will actively participate in the research the production of synthetic powders for industrial applications. This position is in the High Performance Materials group of the Materials Science Division.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct research on materials synthesis using a high-pressure multi-anvil press and/or piston cylinder, including equipment calibration, maintenance, and setup.
  • Develop detailed, carefully controlled procedures to manufacture and purify high pressure phases with desired particle-sizes, lack of inclusions and overall high purity levels, including powder washing procedures.
  • Design and perform experiments to evaluate the effects of fluxes, trace impurities, dopants on kinetic grain growth.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
  • Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
  • Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in chemistry, materials science, geology, physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in large volume, solid-medium pressure devices, such as multi-anvil, piston cylinder.
  • Knowledgeable of the thermodynamic concepts of high P-T phase synthesis and stability, metastability, sintering and grain-growth kinetics, point defect chemistry.
  • Ability as an innovative and independent experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
  • Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with other high P-T manufacturing equipment, such as hot-press, spark plasma sintering, isostatic presses, pressure vessels, gas mixing tube, muffle, or retort furnaces.
  • Experience in a variety of analytical techniques such as electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman, FTIR, synchrotron techniques.
  • Knowledge in industrial applications of ceramic powders, such as abrasives, armor, aerospace, coatings.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
