Job Description

The Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking qualified research scientists and engineers in Atlanta, Georgia. The mission of ACL's Systems Analysis Branch (SAB) is to apply systems engineering and decision analysis to real world systems. SAB includes analysis of system performance in operational environments and system of systems interactions. SAB includes application of systems engineering processes, techniques and tools as well as performing analysis of alternative and tradespace exploration. System analysis work is both quantitative and qualitative.

SAB research scientist responsibilities include:

  • Systems performance analysis
  • Systems of systems interactions analysis
  • Application of model-based systems engineering (including work in the Systems Modeling Language (SysML))
  • Requirements analysis
  • System architecture definition, analysis and validation
  • Risk analysis
  • Trade space exploration
  • Analysis of alternatives
  • Test plan definition
  • Analysis of test results
  • System performance prediction

The individual in this position will apply scientific, engineering and mathematical concepts to perform critical analysis of defense systems and systems of systems. This is multi-disciplinary work that includes technical, economic and operational concerns and focuses on both near-term and future scenarios. 

Position will require continuous on-the-job learning, but experience or expertise in one or more of the following is advantageous:

  1. Aerospace systems,
  2. EO/IR or radar for air and ground based applications,
  3. Modeling and simulation (to include live, virtual and constructive (LVC), physics-based models, effects-based models, semantic models such as SysML),
  4. Electronic warfare techniques,
  5. Current and future kill chains, and
  6. Intelligence gathering and analysis.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field of study.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field of study.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong analytical skills are required.
  • Communication skills, both written and oral, are critical as work often informs decisions at the top-levels of the military and intelligence communities.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance upon hire
