Systems Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

Departments 5873/5877/5879 partner with each other and matrix staff from other Sandia organizations to tackle the full system lifecycle of a technical project from concept, design, and fabrication to development testing, performance verification and support of delivered products.

On any given day you may be asked to:

+ Conduct requirements management utilizing requirements management tools and related software, and support the technical team with requirements engineering.
+ Conduct risk management utilizing risk management tools and related software, and support the technical and program management team with risk mitigation.
+ Lead the effort to coalesce and document evidence and deliverables to meet customer requirements over the entire product lifecycle.
+ Support verification and validation of a system (populating requirements maps, writing test plans, and reviewing/analyzing test data with technical team support to verify requirements are met) and coordinate and track evidence to ensure product acceptance criteria is met.
+ Support logistics and deployment activities as well as ensuring appropriate design definition and integration documentation is created and maintained over the full product lifecycle.
+ With a Systems Engineering emphasis on Product Lifecycle management (PLM), team with design, product and test engineers, as well as analysts, to document and coordinate design definition and verification artifacts; requirements, drawings, analyses, trades, key decisions, test reports, etc.
+ Implement Configuration Management (CM) processes; maintain version control, change control, of design and verification artifacts in a retrievable/discoverable CM system.
+ Develop a material management process along with a long-term sustainment plan; track development and flight hardware; location, pedigree, and environmental exposures; inspect and maintain hardware data packages.
+ Support hardware deliveries for development and qualification activities; ensure that traceable hardware is obtained, managed, and kitted, in accordance with programmatic and technical requirements.
+ Support key gate and design reviews by supporting system leads with design definition documentation and verification artifacts, hardware status, document status, etc.
+ Interact daily with staff in collaborating departments and with US Government strategic partners.
+ Document and track system-level performance requirements and develop acceptance criteria for the subsystem(s) or system.
+ Apply critical thinking to work issues personally and effectively communicate to highlight where additional technical expertise or program leadership is needed.
+ Use customer service skills, employ a consultative approve when providing guidance, and be able to make recommendations based on requirements and circumstances.
+ The successful candidate may fill a position in one of three departments 5873/5877/5879 depending on their strengths, experience and program needs. Leadership and travel opportunities are available, as well as engagement and collaboration to build strategic sponsor partnerships.

+ Bachelors degree plus 5 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
+ Active DOE Q clearance, or equivalent and ability to satisfy SCI access which may require a polygraph.


Ideally, your background would also include:

+ Knowledge of systems engineering development tools, techniques and management.
+ Knowledge of configuration management tools, techniques and management.
+ Ability to review and understand end-to-end work processes.
+ Ability to work closely with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.
+ Strong oral and written communication skills.
+ Ability to work independently and in a teaming environment.
+ Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of computer applications.

Department Description:

The Threat Intelligence Center enables the national security missions of the defense and intelligence communities to reduce threats to our nation by applying engineering expertise to develop solutions to some of the nations most challenging technical problems. The Tailored Operational Support Group (5870) conducts research, development, engineering and analysis for SPP/SIPP sponsors. The group is involved in the program management and development of technologies as part of the Threat Intelligence Center (5800) at Sandia. We provide research, design and development of innovative technologies and sensing systems and technical assessments complemented by intelligence-based analysis. Our teams are diverse technically and reach out to an extended network at the laboratories to address and assess critical national security issues with a multi-disciplinary approach. The departments in Group 5870 tackle a variety of technical projects from concept, to sponsor training, delivery and support of products.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship.
