We are seeking an Early-Career Systems Engineer (R&D S&E, Systems Engineering) to support development of high-impact and high-consequence national security capabilities improving the nations security in the Special Programs Department. Your work will have direct impact to our warfighters, increase national security, and have tangible results that will continually reinforce your commitment to the team and cultivate your creativity.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop mission supporting tactics, techniques and procedures.
+ Support creation of requirements, cost estimates, schedules and project plans taking a sponsor idea to a complete and operational capability.
+ Support and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including information technology, software development and other technical disciplines to influence the development and meet project requirements
+ Team with other project groups to improve and develop collaborations and capabilities which create efficiencies and guide future projects
+ Apply system engineering principles assisting with development of a project while working in a cooperative environment
+ Analyze complex data sets, creating elegant representations of the data to evaluate system performance


+ Your background includes a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (science, technology, engineering or math), or equivalent: higher degree (MS or PhD) in relevant discipline; or engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development
+ You possess expertise in one or more of the following areas: performing project management, developing requirements and concepts of operation, performing trade studies, generating technical documentation, leading system design activities, developing and testing prototype systems, overseeing operational activities, qualifying systems, assessing system reliability and performance, operationally fielding and supporting capabilities, software quality assurance or system testing
+ You can obtain the required US DOE Q-level security clearance with SCI


+ Active DOE Q or SCI level security clearance
+ Advanced degree in engineering or related field; including development and delivery of presentations and scientific/engineering documentation, experience working with US intelligence organizations and the DoD, satellite systems, organizational and critical thinking skills; project management skills; strong interpersonal skills, including effective leadership, delegation, teamwork, negotiation, conflict resolution, and coaching/mentoring skills, architecting IT systems and experience with data processing/analysis
+ Proven interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a dynamic interdisciplinary team environment
+ Proven written communication skills

Department Description:

The Special Programs Department I (8771) is responsible for developing high-impact and high-consequence national security projects supporting a broad range of US government sponsors. Projects revolve around CONOPS creation, traditional Systems Engineering and development of custom software and IT architectures.

While IT architectures and software development are core capabilities, projects span multiple engineering disciplines and have durations ranging from days to years.

Special Programs success comes from the teams ability to create innovative, end-to-end capabilities supporting the most demanding missions. The team works closely with our sponsors to understand their mission and develop solutions based on the sponsors specific needs. Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
