What Your Job Will Be Like:





We are seeking a dynamic Systems Engineer with a knowledge of Electrical Engineering to join the California reliability department! This opening provides an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated staff member with a scientific or engineering background to make significant impact to Sandia and the Nuclear Weapons Program. The main responsibilities of this position include providing reliability predictions, analysis, and assessment services to the Nuclear Weapons Program and communicating findings through reports and presentations to different levels of engineering authority, from staff to executive management, providing critical Research and Development contributions to risk-informed decision-making.







You will become intimately familiar with the detailed function of nuclear weapon components, subsystems, and systems, and gain a breadth of knowledge across all phases of the product realization lifecycle from concept exploration, definition, design, development, production, maintenance, to retirement. You will have the opportunity to exercise investigative freedom in engaging the broad Nuclear Weapons community.







Travel requirements are minimal.











On any given day, you may be called upon to:





+ Apply technical engineering approaches to perform independent reliability analyses with results reported back to Independent Technical Assessment Management and/or the requesting system or component organization. Analyses will vary in subject, complexity, and duration and may have a broad or specific focus on products or processes.



+ Team across various organizations (e.g. Nuclear Deterrence, Surveillance Assessment, Quality, Statistical Sciences) and efforts (e.g. Weapon Assessment Teams, Product Realization Teams, Significant Finding Investigation committees, Red Team) to perform reliability assessments and add to stockpile sustainment and development (e.g. State of the Stockpile, Annual Assessment, Modernization Program Development).



+ Maintain an awareness of issues and communicate risks relating to reliability. Participate in investigations of potential defects and/or performances issues to identify the root cause of anomalies and provide reliability impact assessments.



+ Represent the reliability engineering perspective on Weapon Assessment Teams (WATs) to assess the nuclear weapon safety security, reliability, quality, and surveillance information for each stockpile and modernization weapon system.



+ Maintain a positive relationship with our customers, the weapon systems departments, the Chief Engineer of Nuclear Weapons, and the Deputy Lab Director.



+ Understand reliability failure mechanisms, developments program test plans, and surveillance plans to help Product Realization Teams improve the reliability of their designs.



+ Help improve independent assessment and reliability guidance, processes, metrics, and information management tools.







Qualifications We Require:





+ Master's degree in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related STEM field with at least one year of relevant experience; or equivalent education (bachelors + 5 years; associate’s + 9 years; no degree + 13 years) and engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development



+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance





Qualifications We Desire:





+ Minimum of a minor or associate's degree in Electrical Engineering



+ Ability to read and understand multilayer wire diagrams



+ Familiarity with Analog Circuit design



+ Strong communication skills, verbal and written, with effective time management skills



+ Knowledge of technical quality and system engineering principles and standard methodologies



+ Knowledge and experience in hazards/safety/failure analysis (e.g. fault tree analysis, failure modes, and root cause analyses)



+ Experience or training in nuclear weapons or high-consequence product design, testing, modeling, or assessment



+ Experience in applying reliability theory and a variety of reliability test methods and analyses across a product's lifecycle



+ Familiarity with engineering-level statistical analysis (e.g. probabilistic modeling, margin analyses, Monde Carlo methods



+ Ability to define the problem, gather data from multiple sources, work closely with statisticians and mathematicians, and integrate data and analyses results into reliability reports



+ Ability to work as part of a dynamic, dependable, multi-disciplinary team



+ Ability to think critically, skeptically, and drive the "so what" and "what if" discussions and analysis



+ Prefer active DOE L or Q clearance or equivalent with other US government agency (e.g. DOD)





About Our Team:



The primary mission of the CA System and Component Reliability Department is to provide reliability analysis services on behalf of the NNSA to the Nuclear Deterrence Program. The department provides independent reliability estimates and assessments of nuclear weapon systems, sub-systems, and components throughout the design-to-retirement life cycle. Assessments performed by this department apply probabilistic reliability models and reliability engineering practices to provide quantitative and qualitative measures that contribute to understanding the impact of design and technology changes. The department supports both development programs for modernization as well as continuing stockpile systems, and strives to provide technically comprehensive, accurate, useful, and timely estimates and assessments. The department provides reliability engineering support for modernization programs to establish sound technical bases to support reliability assertions.

Security Clearance:
