Systems Engineer, NIF Timing

We have an opening for a Systems Engineer to lead the design, integration, and performance monitoring of the timing systems for our National Ignition Facility (NIF). NIF is the world's most powerful and energetic laser. Working with multi-disciplinary teams, you will be responsible for architecting new timing capabilities, analyzing, and reporting system performance, and deploying state-of-the-art systems capable of ensuring that the timing of all the NIF 192 laser beams arriving at target chamber center is better than 30ps rms. You will also analyze and develop systems that accurately synchronize triggering of all NIF laser and target diagnostics. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Interact and collaborate with the experimental community and the Physics Facility Integration Group (PFIG) to better understand NIF platform complex timing requirements, while working independently, under minimal direction.
  • Develop and refine complex requirements for timing systems that improve NIF's overall capabilities of meeting users demanding performance expectations.
  • Architect new timing capabilities, perform advanced analysis, and report on system performance.
  • Analyze timing performance through diagnostics and determine proper synchronization for triggering these diagnostics.
  • Develop, design, and implement capabilities and methods for accurately determining the arrival time of NIF laser pulses along the beam path .
  • Lead analysis of timing performance on NIF shots; generate regular reports on performance and present analysis results in a peer-reviewed setting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

  • Develop strategic, long-term planning and serve as a subject matter expert on high complex matters involving NIF Timing.
  • Mentor junior engineering staff & technicians on complex timing systems.
  • Represent NIF's timing capabilities as a subject matter expert in peer reviewed publications and conferences.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Opto-electronic engineering, Physics, or an equivalent combination of education and previously relevant experience.
  • Advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, decision making, and analytical skills and experience necessary to independently anticipate, analyze, advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions to complex issues in collaboration with other while working under minimal direction.
  • Significant experience designing high-speed timing systems.
  • Advanced understanding of electronics theory, including analog and digital circuitry.
  • Experience performing complex measurements and analysis on high-speed signals with bandwidths greater than 10GHz.
  • Significant experience with fiber optic technologies including modulators, attenuators, and detectors.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information including providing advice to management.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

  • Substantial experience leading cross-functional teams in the design, development, and deployment of new highly complex capabilities.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain complex technical information, document work, prepare and present data and provide recommendations to management and external partners as appropriate.
  • Highly advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills to anticipate, identify, and independently recommend appropriate actions and solutions.

Qualifications we desire:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Security Clearance

This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on the particular assignment.
