MITRE is currently seeking a motivated data analyst or data scientist to work on high priority aviation projects that benefit the flying public and other aviation system stakeholders. This position offers the opportunity to:

Apply innovative analysis techniques and generate creative solutions across multiple challenging problems in the field of aviation
Contribute to projects implementing Federal Aviation Administrations NextGen technologies that improve the capacity, efficiency, and safety of the air traffic management system
Work on a wide variety of projects and creatively leverage multiple skills across a broad range of scientific, engineering, and software domains to solve problems individually and in a team-based environment

Key Functions:
The successful candidate will support MITREs FAA work program by performing data analysis and data processing using appropriate tools and technologies to meet both internal analysis and external client requirements. Expect a team environment with self-motivated, highly trained professionals. Key activities will include:
- Analyzing historical and simulated aviation operations data to draw conclusions about the efficacy of airport design, aeronautical procedure design, and air traffic systems and initiatives
- Developing data analysis processes and algorithms and implementing these in a programming language (predominately, Python and/or R)
- Contextualizing a wide array of aircraft and aviation system data to provide defensible and meaningful interpretations of results in both written and verbal form

Required Qualifications include:
- Bachelor's degree in data analytics, applied mathematics/statistics, engineering, operations research, or related technical field
- Demonstrated ability to scope, plan, execute, and document a complex data analysis activity
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, apply good judgment, and independently draw conclusions from observed data
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Direct work experience and/or classroom learning demonstrating the ability to:
- Conduct analysis on large data sets to identify patterns, trends, emerging behaviors, etc.
- Implement data processing routines and data analysis algorithms in a programming language (e.g., Python, R, Scala, Java)
- Interact with data through one or more data processing capabilities (e.g. Apache Spark, Apache Beam, SQL Querying)
- Apply advanced statistical data analysis methods
- Convey the results of data analysis using data visualization tools (e.g., Python/R plotting libraries, Tableau, D3.js)

Preferred Experience:
- Experience with aviation data analysis, including with radar data and FAA/industry data sets (e.g., ASPM, OOOI, ASQP, Form 41, OPSNET, O/D Survey, etc.)
- Analysis of airport/aircraft operations and/or instrument flight procedures
