Systems Maintenance Engineer

We have an opening for a Systems Maintenance Engineer. This position is responsible for establishing and implementing reliability-centered maintenance operations processes, procedures, and practices for LLNL's common real property and installed equipment for non-reactor nuclear facilities and conventional facilities. This position will serve as the point of contact for maintenance of real property and installed equipment and will provide consultative advice using leading-edge principles, technologies, and best practices. This position will be responsible for providing a high level of direction for the broad and diverse operational functions of the maintenance organization and will frequently interact with LLNL multi-crafts personnel, Program Representatives, Area Facility Operations Managers, Facility Managers, Facility Points of Contact, peers, LLNL Senior Management and DOE/NNSA representatives. This position will report to the Engineering Services Division Leader in the Infrastructure Engineering and Operations Department (IEOD).

In this role you will

  • Collaborate and provide day-to-day technical direction to a group of Infrastructure & Operations (I&O) technical personnel including shops/crafts personnel engaged in the planning, engineering, maintenance and operations of building systems for non-reactor nuclear facilities and conventional facilities.
  • Provide recommendations to resolve facility maintenance and reliability issues.
  • Develop, review and maintain Maintenance Plans for Building Systems in collaboration with Facilities Managers and Systems Engineers.
  • Perform or coordinate the performance of post-maintenance testing to verify that equipment systems and components fulfill their design function when returned to service.
  • Manage maintenance procedural documentation, including the evaluation of special processes and procedures, requirements for personnel training in the use of special equipment and materials used in the performance of maintenance tasks, and assessment of potential hazards to personnel and equipment.
  • Manage the Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) program to monitor, determine trends, analyze parameters, properties, and performance characteristics or signatures of equipment in order to forecast equipment degradation.
  • Conduct Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) using systematic methodology to determine and correct root causes of problems, unplanned events, and occurrences related to the maintenance and the reliability of equipment and building systems.
  • Perform design reviews of construction documents for new construction, modifications, and alterations for non-reactor nuclear and conventional facilities to ensure maintainability and reliability.
  • Review building commissioning plans for design intent, scope, verification, functional test procedures, schedules and training requirements.
  • Develop, monitor, and report on maintenance reinvestment projects for facilities.
  • Perform revisions to the LLNL Maintenance Management Program including programs for non-reactor nuclear facilities.
  • Collaborate with customers, programs, and departments to ensure a high quality of service.
  • Partner with Facility Management and other laboratory personnel regarding building systems integrity, outages, repairs, modifications and operating requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports and present formal presentations.
  • Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable Engineering discipline or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience and demonstrated ability to lead independent work.
  • Significant experience in maintenance planning and operations, or facility engineering and management of laboratory, non-reactor nuclear, or high technical facilities, including significant applicable experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management software system.
  • Advanced knowledge of interpreting multi-discipline construction drawings and related documents and performing formal design reviews with expertise in applicable design codes, standards, construction processes and products.
  • Significant experience interfacing with government agencies on facility related issues.
  • Technical, analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple and frequently conflicting, concurrent tasks, with good follow-through and the ability to provide effective technical leadership in this environment.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to customer service and exceptional interpersonal skills necessary to interact and work with customers, senior management, peers, technicians, and skilled craft personnel.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, write procedures and safety related documentation, perform engineering analyses and author safety reports, give technical presentations and provide advice to management.
  • Proven ability to work independently as a highly motivated, self-directed individual with the ability to analyze and solve complex problems.
  • Advanced proficiency with personal computers and discipline specific facility type software (such as AutoCAD, MS Project, Access) and using MS Office applications, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 30 lbs. in a safe and controlled manner.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Demonstrated knowledge of building low voltage (600V and below) electrical systems.
  • Certification as a Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in California or other State or Territory with the ability to receive professional reciprocity.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
