Whole Life Engineering Directorate: is a member of the systems engineering organization. The main objective of Whole Life Engineering is to influence hardware, software, and systems throughout all phases of a systems life cycle to assure effective operation, reliability and economical ownership by the customer and end users.

System Safety Engineering is a Department of Whole Life Engineering: The System Safety department sets system requirements, analyzes the design, assesses test data, reviews operating and maintenance manuals, and assess risk by way of hazard analyses, and software and firmware safety programs. System safety provides assurance to our employees, the customer and end users that our products safely perform their required mission functions throughout their lifecycle while meeting overall cost and schedule requirements.

The System Safety Department is a stable, employee-focused team operating in a dynamic, change-oriented environment. We methodically analyze missile and defense programs at a component and system level to identify, eliminate or mitigate hazards, As a member of the team, youll collaborate across departments, including Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Supply Chain, Operations, Test & Integration and Production.

As a Systems Safety Engineer, you will analyze engineering hardware and electrical drawings and schematics assessing for fault tolerance, latent hazards, and safety requirements compliance. A System Safety Engineer works with test and tactical operating and maintenance procedures to assure the proper administrative controls are in place. As a System Safety Engineer, you will work across all integrated product teams and lines to properly eliminate hazards or provide effective controls. The System Safety Engineer interacts with Program Management and government approval authorities from program startup through production to demilitarization and disposal.

Key Responsibilities will include:
  • Performing MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program engineering tasks and analyses, or customers approved equivalent
  • Applying technical knowledge to meet company and customer needs and requirements
  • Interpreting system requirements, customer specifications and military standards to develop appropriate safety requirements for hazard mitigation or elimination
  • System Design Analyses (fault tree, hazard, sneak circuit and software/firmware safety programs)
  • Safety Requirements Verification (test, demonstration, inspection, analysis)
  • Preparing internal and customer reports
  • Collaborating with multiple disciplines to gain a full understanding of product architecture and design

    Some U.S. domestic travel may be required.

    This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only US Citizens are eligible for a security clearance

    Required Skills:
  • 6+ years experience in the field of: System Safety Engineering; or Energetics, Explosives, or Propellant Safety; or Battery Safety; or Software or Firmware Engineering; or equivalent Safety Engineering Experience (e.g. Aerospace Safety, Automotive Safety, or Medical Device safety engineering).
    • 4+ years of experience in the aforementioned areas along with a relevant Master's Degree may be considered for this job
  • US citizenship is required

    Desired Skills:
  • Experience conducting: Subsystem Hazard Analyses, Bent Pin Analysis, Functional Hazard Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, Inhibit or other Fault Tolerant Analyses, and/or Software or Firmware Safety Programs
  • Experience reading, reviewing, and understanding technical engineering drawings
  • Presenting technical information at design reviews
  • Experience with DoD Systems Safety standard practice MIL-STD-882E
  • Experience with software and firmware development including: C, C++, Java, VHDL, and assembly languages
  • Experience with application of Emotional Intelligence concepts, techniques
  • Self-starter with the ability to independently pursue technical information and problem solve
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment
  • M.S. in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM); Desired: ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard

    Required Education: BS in a STEM discipline or BA in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or Chemistry
